The Biomedical Engineering Program in the Department of Physics and Engineering is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician. This position is primarily responsible for assisting with the operation of a biomedical engineering teaching laboratory as well as maintaining and operation of a machine shop, working on various instructional student projects and experiments. Applicants must have the ability to lift 50 lbs.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision on multiple tasks, possess strong organizational, time management, and planning skills and the willingness to learn new systems, tools, machines, and protocols.
Maintaining the safety of the lab/machine shop environment and of the students.
Maintaining and operating machine tools including CNC, 3-D printer, laser cutter, milling machine, lathe machine, drill press, grinders, sanders, welders, etc.
Overseeing the preparation of all laboratory materials, components, and tooling in advance of each new semester.
Maintaining inventory, service records, and performing purchasing of supplies & materials used to support the laboratory instruction.
Working knowledge of CAD software (AutoCAD/Inventor, SolidWorks etc.).
Preparing the appropriate equipment and shop/laboratory space(s) before the start of each new lab session.
Cleaning the laboratory machine and equipment, resetting the equipment and shop/laboratory space(s) after each lab has been completed.
Assisting in decontaminating, washing, and sterilizing laboratory glassware.
Training the students on proper use of equipment in the machine shop and lab.
Supporting engineering outreach and recruitment activities.
Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent education and training in engineering and machine shop operations required, or associate degree with at least 3 year working experiences in engineering or related field.
Knowledge of schematics, block diagrams, mechanical/electro assembly drawings.
Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills required to train and instruct students on the appropriate operation of equipment.
