The primary responsibilities of the Senior IT Technologist I position includes, but are not limited to: providing day-to-day technology support to faculty, staff, and students within the Division of Biology at the University of Tennessee. The IT Technologist will need to work effectively with other members of the technology team as well as in cross-functional teams, providing a high level of customer service and satisfaction to both internal and external constituents. The individual will need to be a strong team player while also being an individual self-starter and should have the ability to work multiple projects at the same time.
A successful candidate will perform evaluations and performance monitoring of IT equipment and hardware. The type of work will include designing, configuring, troubleshooting, modifying, and repairing computers, peripherals, and other IT equipment along with writing and modifying code as required. Additional responsibilities of this position will be to provide technical support, maintenance, repair, and design for scientific instrumentations used in teaching, research, and medical testing for clients.
Maintains information technology equipment and resources. Configures, troubleshoots, operates, modifies, and repairs hardware and software. Performs problem resolution of operating systems, applications, hardware and networking. Evaluates and monitors IT equipment and resources. Removes virus spyware. Provides consultation to customers as to design, development, and implementation of technology equipment, and resources. Provide technical IT guidance to faculty, staff and students upon request. Assist with establishing, maintaining, and training employees on a cloud based computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
Maintenance, calibration and interfacing with scientific equipment
Maintains, repairs, and calibrates complex Microscopy equipment to include compound, stereo, fluorescence, inverted and polarizing microscopes. Calibrations include optical alignment, Kohler alignment, parfocality, phase contrast cal. parcentraton, stage tracking including fluorescence beam alignment. Maintains and calibrates analytical balances to class 1 standards. Assist with calibrations to include standard traceability, record keeping, and automating recertification notifications. Install data loggers with telemetry equipment and program automations. Install switches and set up power-over-ethernet (POE) sensors.
Provides technical support for complex research, medical, and teaching instrumentation. This equipment includes but is not limited to: microscopy, chromatography, spectroscopy, centrifugation, water purification, patient monitoring, balances/scales, laminar flow hoods, biological safety cabinets, co2 incubators, ovens, furnaces, shakers, electronic pipettes, microtone/cryostat, gel documentation, syringe pumps, peristaltic pumps, autoclaves, environmental controlled chambers, electronic controller, x-ray generators, bi-reactors, PH meters, vortex mixers, water baths, etc. Repairs clean hoods and biological safety cabinets.
Design and Installation
Designs unique prototypical instruments that are utilized in various teaching and research fields. Retrofits or redesigns existing instrumentation in need of re-purposing. Installs, maintains and programs emergency telephone data dialing systems. Design and build mobile applications for data collection and scientific research. Assist with inventory management and assigning QR and bar codes to assets.
