Provides substance use treatment to outpatients at the Comprehensive Addiction Resources & Education (CARE) Center, a part of the state-designated Northern New Jersey Medication-Assisted Treatment Center of Excellence (COE), and inpatients on the Addiction Consultation Service at University Hospital. Participates in a collaborative relationship with our multidisciplinary team consisting of physicians, nurses, social workers, a pharmacist, community coordinators, a technician, and office assistants. Provides supervision and teaching for trainees, educates and serves as a role model for other staff, and assists in organizing educational activities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Performs comprehensive substance use disorder evaluations and follow-up visits for CARE Center and addiction consultation service patients at University Hospital. Provides occasional weekend coverage (remote back-up call) for the addiction consultation service at University Hospital.
Maintains a friendly, warm and compassionate attitude toward patients. Employs a harm reduction philosophy for substance-using patients and contributes to a clinic atmosphere of tolerance and respect for all patients.
Provides supervision and teaching for rotating trainees, including addiction medicine fellows, psychiatry residents, psychology interns, and interns/rotators from various other disciplines.
Maintains thorough and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
Possess a DATA 2000 waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder. Reserves buprenorphine treatment panel slots for CARE Center patients. Follows federal record-keeping requirements for buprenorphin
Helps to de-escalate crisis situations and manage interpersonally difficult situations.
Participates in clinical trainings along with other CARE Center and COE staff as requested.
Serves as a liaison with community providers and hospital colleagues.
Provides patient education to meet the needs of the patient/family.
Interfaces with physicians and other specialists concerning patient car
Interfaces with families to obtain and provide information concerning patient's medical care and progress.
Collects relevant data and interacts with collateral contacts in the community and hospital as necessary.
With assistance of clinical staff, coordinates appropriate referrals to specialties for patient care consultation, including primary care and infectious disease clinics
Prescribes or recommends medications or other forms of treatment as clinically indicated. Administers depot injections as clinically indicated.
May participate in quality improvement activities at the CARE Center and COE research activities and data collection.
Understands and adheres to Rutgers’ compliance standards as they appear in RBHS’s Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
Keeps abreast of all pertinent federal, state and Rutgers’ regulations, laws and policies as they presently exist and as they change or are modified, especially special confidentiality regulations which apply to substance-using patients.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
