The UCSD Department of Pharmacology is one of two basic science units in the School of Medicine where world-class researchers investigate the effects of chemical interventions on biological systems. The faculty are internationally renowned for their strength in elucidating basic cellular and molecular mechanisms of signal transduction that lead to innovative drug target identification and ultimately to cutting edge drug discovery. Under close supervision, Research Lab Assistant performs operational level work in a research laboratory assisting with routine preparation of experiments, making media, autoclaving, ordering supplies and helping with laboratory administrative tasks. This position reports directly to the Laboratory Research Coordinator and assists as directed in the routine mouse colony maintenance including inventory mice, husbandry and general genotyping. Maintains mouse-facility work spaces in a clean and usable manner. Document/data entry of the genealogy of mouse lines.
Performs laboratory maintenance duties (including ordering supplies, assuring that lab equipment is kept in working condition and general clean up). Performs routine office duties including assisting with PI's travel arrangements and reconciliations, assisting wit laboratory budgets, preparing reimbursement requests for lab events, creating and maintaining electronic and manual filing systems, entering research data into computer system, ordering laboratory and office supplies. The incumbent will also obtain signatures and interface with departmental contacts. Interacts easily with faculty, postdoctoral scholars, students and research technicians in a medium sized laboratory. Due to the nature of this assignment, this position requires consistent dependability and commitment throughout the year including winter, spring and summer breaks.
Graduation from high school or a GED and one (1) year of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated ability to maintain careful, legible and well-organized laboratory notes.
Thorough knowledge of providing mouse colony maintenance, inventory, husbandry and general genotyping. Knowledge of or experience working with mice as a research model system.
Administrative skills such as ordering supplies and maintenance of inventory. Organizational skills to create and maintain electronic and manual filing systems for large volumes of research.
Ability to follow basic research protocols, solutions formulas and follow instructions closely. Ability to follow basic research protocols, solutions, formulas and follow instructions closely.
Ability to set up experiments, make media and perform autoclaving.
Knowledge of or experience working with and maintaining established cell lines.
Experience and skill in using computers and internet to assist PI with travel arrangements.
Experience with MS Excel to help maintain lab budgets and reconciliations. Experience with MS Word for preparing laboratory meeting agendas.
Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety and ability to work carefully with potentially harmful agents.
Knowledge of basic laboratory procedures and equipment, including preparation of buffers.
Prefer Bachelors degree in biological sciences (mammalian cells) or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
