Electronic Media Technician Senior - Athletics 16483
The Athletics department at West Virginia University is seeking applications for an Electronic Media Technician Senior. This position is responsible for providing assistance to the Electronics Engineer in testing, repair and maintenance of WVU Athletic Department electronic equipment. This requires junior level technical support under the direction of the Electronics Engineer. Maintain an extensive parts inventory for all systems and equipment and work with outside contractors and broadcast networks for access to and assistance in WVU venues as related to Athletic Department equipment. Work standards for this position must be maintained to a level as not to substantially impact the University in either a financial or image perspective.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Provide technical support to coaches, staff and sporting events in any manner as directed by the Electronics Engineer. This shall include but not limited to the actual set-up and testing of in game scoring and timing systems, intercom and audio / computer networks as related to in game and broadcast usage.
Adjust and test digital audio systems on a per event basis is necessary. Familiarity with state-of-the-art equipment is essential in order to identify problems quickly and avoid disruption of WVU Athletic events and day to day operations. In game and live broadcast scoring, data and audio require immediate response in the event of failure or adjustments.
Maintain broadcast backbone systems including triax, SMPTE 311M, coax, and balanced / unbalanced audio cabling and fiber optic cables and connections.
Work with visiting broadcaster in assisting with the exchange of audio, video and data between WVU venues and visiting mobile production studios and networks.
Back up data from multiple venue computers to assure reliable continued operation. This data includes large video files of various formats, custom software specific to scoring, timing and LED video displays, computer hardware settings and configuration files for audio / video processing equipment.
Maintain a detailed computer-based inventory of replacement parts for all equipment.
Inspect and maintain custom video and audio displays in basketball and football Hall of Fame and other public access areas. Maintain, clean and adjust displays as needed.
Provide game day technical assistance to Mountaineer Sports Network by IMG (audio, video and data).
Maintain and program computer-controlled lighting systems and interfaces via computer or custom panels.
Fabricate and install custom broadcast interface panels as part of the broadcast backbone upgrades and installs.
Coordinate installation of new equipment with outside vendors while maintaining WVU regulations of construction.
Provide systems support and coordinate with multiple crafts as well as WVU and non WVU personnel.
Effect timely resolution of system failures and work with ever changing broadcast formats and equipment is essential.
Provide testing and preventive maintenance of A/V equipment, cabling and scoring systems. Requires familiarity with soldering and using test equipment such as digital volt meters, oscilloscopes and some specialty service equipment.
Provide production assistance for broadcasts including audio production, video distribution, setup and maintenance.
Perform other duties as required, including non-technical duties associated with game management activities at major athletic events. Cleaning and maintaining work and equipment areas to extend life of electrical equipment.
Manage sensitive and confidential information related to student-athletes, coaches and staff utilizing discretion and correct decisions.
Work Hours : Work can be scheduled days, nights, weekends and holidays. OVERTIME AND CONSECUTIVE DAY COVERAGE IS MANDATORY. This position's work schedule does not follow the standard University work calendar. Game and other event coverage is required.
Pay Grade : 14
Associates degree or equivalent.
Working knowledge of setup and operation of Division I sporting events. (Scoring, Timing and A/V related equipment).
Two (2) years of experience in computer skills (Windows, Apple or LINUX OS).
Setup and operation of Division I or II sporting events, basic computer skills, use and programming of DANTE audio systems.
Within 1 year of employment individual will be required to test and pass NICET Audio Level I.
Formal training in electronics is desired but equivalent work in the setup and operation of analog and digital electronic equipment, broadcast engineering or similar sports venue work for 1 or more years would give sufficient background to enter and progress with continuing industry training in this position. Continuing education of new technologies as related to this position are vital to performing job duties.
Knowledge of computer networking and game systems lends itself highly beneficial.
The ability to use specialized hand tools and equipment used in electronics is necessary (Oscilloscope, digital volt/ohm meter, soldering iron, etc.).
General knowledge of component and system level electronics as related to video and audio.
Knowledge of NEC electrical codes, rules and regulations governing work in educational and public facilities, as well as construction practices.
Knowledge to effect actual event changes such as audio patch bay assignments and audio level adjustment. Must be able to operate test equipment and self-educate on new and developing technologies and test equipment required for those technologies.
Should possess communication skills in both a technical and literate sense, to affect coordination with technical and nontechnical persons, and afford the assimilation of technical data for management and decision making.
Valid driver's license.
Climb and carry ladders up to 12 feet (not permitted to exceed 12 feet in height)
Lifting and carrying over 50 lbs.
