Responsible for providing engineering and technical support in the areas of relay protection and related control functions. Prepares protection applications including equipment specification and application and installation drawings. Also assists the Meter Engineer with revenue meter installations and technical support, as needed
Essential Job Functions
Designs new and modifies protective relay schemes or any required modifications to existing systems.
Coordinates protective relays for transmission lines, substations, and generation stations.
Evaluates all relay operations, troubleshoots relay problems, and recommends/implements required modifications of scheme and/or setting changes. This includes working with technicians to gather data to evaluate problems.
Performs short circuit and protective relay coordination studies.
Generates and maintains all appropriate data for short-circuit computer programs.
Maintains and distributes, as necessary, all current protective relay/device settings.
Applies and recommends devices needed to analyze system protection equipment; coordinates their installation and use as required
Prepares responses to government, or other regulatory body, requests associated with system protection.
Prepares documents for the maintenance of supporting documentation associated with applicable regulatory or industry standards related to system protection.
Maintains and applies other engineering software and data needed to perform other engineering studies.
Position may be filled at entry level requiring no experience however candidates with greater experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered for higher level engineering classification.
Certifications and Licensures:
PE License Preferred
Successfully pass a security sensitive background screening Required
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
Experience with electromechanical, solid state, and microprocessor based relays.
Strong working knowledge of transmission, distribution, and substation equipment.
Working knowledge and familiarity with the engineering principles, practices, procedures, materials and equipment used in the planning, design, technical and economic analysis, operation, repair and maintenance of protective relays and meters.
Strong understanding of the principles and methods of power system analysis.
Ability to analyze and understand a complex electrical circuit problem.
Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated proficiency in electronic equipment applications and associated software.
Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks with minimal supervision as well as within a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and self-motivated.
