![]() Junior Specialist/Coaker lab POSITION DESCRIPTION Junior Specialist in the Coaker Lab NATURE AND PURPOSE The position of Specialist has a narrow focus in a specialized area and provides technical or specialized expertise (e.g., with instrumentation and research equipment or with social science research methods) in the planning and execution of a research project. The Specialist stays apprised of emerging issues and problems and maintain technical competence in the designated area(s) of specialization. Within this defined area and when appropriate, the Specialist is expected to provide leadership, facilitate teamwork and develop collaborative relationships with colleagues and to supply input into the planning of research and educational programs. Normally, Specialists do not have Principal Investigator (PI) status but may obtain permission by exception and/or collaborate with a PI in preparing research proposals for extramural funding. The Specialist is evaluated for merit and promotion using three basic criteria outlined below. Overview of main duties: Support greenhouse and lab experiments aimed at investigating plant innate immune responses. Assist in propagating and generating transgenic or genome edited plants. Assist in cloning different genes for plant transformation. Perform pathogen assays on different plant genotypes, including bacterial growth, reactive oxygen species production, and qPCR. Organize samples and data collected in multiple studies as well as contribute to statistical analyses of these data. This position requires a strong interest in plant biology, plant pathology and genetics. It includes propagation and genetic investigation of tomato and Arabidopsis. The Jr Specialist will provide support in research experiments including sampling design. Engagement in research activity is an essential part of this position including tasks such as contribution to academic publications and working with the PI, research team, and project stakeholders to discuss current and future research directions. Contribute to the drafting/editing of manuscripts, research reports, and summarization of data collection to produce academic publications for peer reviewed journals. Contribute to drafting analyses for presentations at professional conferences. Work with undergraduate students and other lab staff including assisting with maintaining laboratory safety standards. Specific Responsibilities: Research (85%): The incumbent of this position will be actively and significantly involved in publishable research activities through the following roles and duties: Professional Competence (10%): University and Public Service (5%): BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: This position requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree (Plant Pathology or similar field). PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. They will also have strong interpersonal, communication, organizational, and decision-making skills. NOTE: The junior specialist rank is an entry level position; accordingly, it is inappropriate to hire applicants with advanced degrees in this field, or those with bachelor's degrees and three years' relevant work experience.
