Position SummaryThe Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at MSU seeks an individual to provide oversight and management of the Composite Materials and Structures Center (CMSC). This position requires a combination of research, outreach, and education and management duties and responsibilities in the area of materials characterization, fabrication, and processing. It requires the specialist to provide instruction to faculty, staff, and students in the operation of specialized equipment and analytical instruments, such as thermal analysis, infrared analysis, mechanical analysis, surface characterization, polymer and composite processing, and scanning electron microscopy. A major responsibility of the position is the organization and coordination of access to and use of the CMSC facilities by postdoctoral scholars, staff scientists, graduate students, and technician staff members supporting faculty working in more than a dozen departments across the University. Additional duties include the acquisition, maintenance, and instruction in the use of analytical, characterization, testing, and processing equipment in the CMSC facility. Another element of this position is responsibility for outreach interaction with companies in the plastics, composites, automotive, chemical, materials, and other industry sectors to perform testing and analysis. The position frequently requires the individual to write proposals and to serve as Principal Investigator. Administrative duties are to maintain the daily operation of the CMSC laboratory, including invoicing for laboratory charges, equipment purchases, troubleshooting of malfunctioning instruments, upgrading and replacing analytical and characterization instrumentation, scheduling of equipment, supervision of personnel, etc. This position is fixed term with the initial end date one year from hire date, with the possibility of renewal or transition into the continuing system based upon mutual agreement and satisfactory performance. Required DegreeBachelors -Materials Science & Engineering; or related field Minimum RequirementsApplicants should have a BS degree (or higher) in Materials Science and Engineering or a related field, and 5-10 years of experience in materials technology, including both processing and characterization. Desired QualificationsA Master’s degree and a strong academic or industrial background in materials research, development, or manufacturing will be considered strong points for candidates.
