Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 am to 4:45 pm
Job Summary: The Instrumentation Specialist is responsible for the day-to-day operation and routine maintenance of the assigned instrument within an assigned lab. These instruments include electron microscopes, focus ion beam microscopes, X-ray diffractometers, and similarly related instruments and ancillary specimen preparation equipment.
Additional Department Summary: The Engineering Technician will be required to install, operate, and maintain a number of experimental instruments and equipment involving mechanical and/or electrical systems. The Engineering Technician will also be expected to train students in the safe use of this equipment and to provide supervision of experimental procedures in the laboratories. In addition, the Engineering Technician will help to design and implement experimental procedures. Finally, this position will also have laboratory safety responsibilities for hazards associated with equipment and laboratory spaces under supervision. The Engineering Technician may also be involved in writing standard operating procedures for the equipment under supervision. The responsibilities of this position will span across multiple departments within the College of Engineering, including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.
Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree or higher and three (3) years of experience in an industrial or research laboratory; OR Associate's degree and five (5) years of experience in an industrial or research laboratory. Must have valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.
Skills and Knowledge: Experience with data collection software such as LabView and computer-aided drafting (CAD) software is desirable. Hands-on experience with electrical and/or mechanical systems is also highly desirable.
