To perform a variety of routine and specialized research duties in the field and laboratory requiring considerable knowledge of the principles and theories of applied sciences, laboratory techniques, and methods for obtaining research data. Employees perform work within groups and independently within established methods and procedures.
Assists with packaging and arranging seed. Plants OVT yield trial plots. Assists with maintenance of plot appearance and labeling plots in the field. Assists with harvesting of OVT yield trials for corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, wheat, oats and peanuts. Collects data to be published in the yield trial publication. Rogues, conditions, treats, and packages foundation seed. Cleans and maintains seed plant equipment. Assists with the upkeep of equipment, publication mail-outs, and other various tasks pertaining to lab work association with the production of variety trials. Perform related duties as assigned.
High school education or equivalent. Six months, or greater, of experience related to the duties and responsibilities specified and six months of general experience. Must have a valid driver's license.
Field and laboratory work experience beyond the minimum required. Associate Degree in Agriculture with minimum of two years' experience in agricultural research or the equivalent. A Certified Pesticide Applicator's Certificate. Experience in small plot research with multiple crops in desirable. Experience in operation of farm machinery. Ability to operate small farm equipment including specialized equipment for small plot field research. Maintenance of chemical and equipment inventories associated with crop research programs, demonstrated ability to work in a team environment. The individual must be capable of carrying out assigned research duties following supervisor's instructions.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of or experience operating tractors or forklifts. Knowledge using seed counters, plot planters, plot combines, and spray equipment. Knowledge of interpreting field plans. Knowledge of the process of collecting data from research plots prior to and after harvest. Knowledge of experience working with the following crops: corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, peanuts, rice and grain sorghum. Ability to perform mechanical skills. Knowledge of welding and fabricating metal.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort
Regularly involves lifting, bending or other physical exertion. Often exposed to one or more elements such as heat, cold, noise, dust, dirt, chemicals, etc.. The ability to work after normal work hours during peak seasons will be required. Routine deadlines; usually sufficient lead time; variance in work volume seasonal and predictable; priorities can be anticipated; some interruptions are present; involves occasional exposure to demands and pressures from persons other than immediate supervisor. Job frequently requires standing, walking, reaching, stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling, talking, hearing, handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Job occasionally requires sitting, climbing, or balancing and lifting more than 100 pounds. Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically.
