Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Accelerator Tech-Applied Physics (ATAP) Division has an opening for a Research Scientist within the Berkeley Accelerator Controls and Instrumentation (BACI) Center.
The mission of the BACI Center is to advance particle accelerator technology and instrumentation with advanced RF design, ultra-high precision FPGA-based RF controls and its applications to high power fiber laser systems and quantum qubits controls.
In this exciting role, you will perform research within the BACI Center as a key member to collaborate with the project team of the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) to conduct the beam impedance and instability studies of the ALS-U Accumulator and Storage rings, and participate and contribute to the advanced control R&D using machine learning techniques on the development of scalable technologies for coherently combined ultrafast fiber lasers and spectral bandwidth broadening techniques, and explore the performance of spatiotemporal pulse combination systems, high energy fiber amplifiers, and electronic stabilization methods.
What You Will Do:
Develop advanced computational methods and impedance models (2D and 3D) for the Accumulator Ring (AR) and Storage Ring (SR) of the ALS-U.
Conduct wakefield and impedance simulation studies using both analytical approach and 3D simulation codes, such as CST MWS or Ace3P to evaluate the impedance threshold in support of collective beam instability study.
Collaborate closely with scientists and engineers with the ALS-U project team in finding solutions for impedance mitigation to increase the beam threshold and lifetime.
Development of advanced controls using Machine Learning (ML) technique to the development of scalable technologies for coherently combined ultrafast fiber lasers.
Work independently and collaboratively within BACI and ATAP to support ongoing and future R&D projects.
Document and communicate the research results in reports and oral presentations, including participation in DOE project reviews, workshops and conferences and publications in refereed journals.
What is Required:
Ph.D. in Physics or related field with at least four years of postdoctoral research experience, or equivalent breadth and depth of experience.
Experience in using advanced RF simulation codes, such as CST Microwave Studio, SUPERFISH on RF structure designs, and beam dynamics simulation codes of Elegant.
Experience with impedance and wakefield modeling of RF components in accelerators.
Experimental experience with the controls of coherently combined ultrafast fiber laser systems.
Excellent theoretical knowledge and practical experience on deep learning and its application to real-time feedback control, including supervised and/or unsupervised training, simulation with physical models, and hardware implementations.
Capability to be flexible and creative in pursuing new topics and carrying out forefront research in the area of advanced high brightness electron sources, RF structures and beam diagnostics.
Ability to work independently and in collaboration with scientists, engineers, and technicians both within and outside LBNL.
Excellent analytical, organizational, and multi-tasking skills.
Availability to travel and present work at collaboration meetings, workshops and conferences, including international travel.
Excellent communication skills to effectively interact with members of ATAP, Engineering Division and ALS-U, including other scientists, engineers, technicians, postdocs, and students.
Recognition as a high impact contributor as evidenced by conference presentations, project reviews and publications in refereed journals, invited lectures, and awards.
Ability to work closely in a team with other scientists, postdocs, graduate students, and technicians.
Familiarity with RF and mechanical engineering.
Working knowledge of particle accelerators and beam dynamics.
Experience with beam and RF measurements.
Experience with programming (Matlab, Python, C++, etc.) and optical and/or particle beamline design software.
This is a full time, 3 year, career-track term appointment that may be renewed to a maximum of five years and that may be converted to career based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs.
