The Silva laboratory in the Department of Neurobiology, at the University of Pittsburgh Brain Institute, is seeking an Animal Research Technician to work in a state-of-the-art, internationally recognized research program in the areas of neuroscience, molecular biology, neuroimaging, electrophysiology, behavioral sciences, genetic engineering, aging, and animal model systems. Under the supervision of the PI, the Animal Research Technician will participate in experimental studies involving mouse and marmoset models of neurological disorders, assisting the PI and other laboratory staff, postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate students, in breeding and managing the animal colonies, executing surgical procedures, behavioral training of animals and executing molecular biological and biochemical assays with independence.
The incumbent will be expected to troubleshoot technical issues, clearly document experimental protocols, data and activities in an electronic lab notebook, carefully interpret data, conduct necessary analyses and present data at internal lab meetings. Frequent communication of results, issues, and needs with the PI, and other lab personnel is essential. Contribution to the day-to-day laboratory management and organization is also necessary. This position requires experience in animal handling, mouse breeding and colony maintenance, and genotyping. Experience working with non-human primates is a plus. Additional experience with molecular biology techniques such as Western-blotting, ELISA, an immunohistochemistry is useful. Multi-tasking several experiments simultaneously and efficient time management is necessary. This position is located in the Biomedical Science Tower 3 of the main University of Pittsburgh campus in Oakland.
2 or more years of experience with animal handling and working in an academic/research laboratory. Must have experience working with animals. Experience working with non-human primates preferred.
Combination of education and relevant experience will be considered in lieu of education.
