The Biology Service Facility (BSF) is a core resource in the support of the research and teaching mission of the Division of Biology (including the Biochemistry & Cellular and Molecular Biology (BCMB), Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB), & Microbiology Depts.) and serves other depts. and programs within the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) and the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA). The BSF employs ~10 full-time technicians working in multiple shops including wood, metal, refrigeration, electronics, and computer support and is supported by two administrative staff.
The technical manager (TM) reports to Director of Biology Research Infrastructure within the Division of Biology. The primary duties of the TM are to oversee and facilitate all operations that are performed by BSF. These operations include all areas of project design, construction, installation, maintenance of scientific equipment and instrumentation, coordination of BSF personnel, and oversight of budgets. It also serves as an internal divisional support for desktop computer services for use in the teaching and research programs in the Division of Biology. The TM works closely with students, staff, faculty, and administrators to assist in meeting their research and teaching needs.
The TM will also help with equipment specifications, and ordering new equipment for new and existing faculty members. The TM will oversee personnel within the BSF, including making decisions regarding the assignment and priorities of work, organizing weekly staff meetings, assessing progress, responding to issues within the BSF and in the Division, and participating in projects where needed.
The TM is responsible for staff hiring, evaluations, and disciplinary actions as needed. The TM will work with the BSF Administrative Specialist regarding oversight of billing and fiscal management of recovery funds. The TM also serves as building representative for multiple buildings on and off campus including all buildings occupied by the Division of Biology faculty/staff and is the primary liaison with Facility Services. The TM will coordinate building maintenance utility issues, facilitate laboratory renovations and changes.
