As a UW employee, you have a unique opportunity to change lives on our campuses, in our state and around the world. UW employees offer their boundless energy, creative problem solving skills and dedication to build stronger minds and a healthier world.
UW faculty and staff also enjoy outstanding benefits, professional growth opportunities and unique resources in an environment noted for diversity, intellectual excitement, artistic pursuits and natural beauty. All of which has allowed the UW to be nationally recognized as a “Great College to Work For” for six consecutive years.
The Center for Experimental Nuclear Physics and Astrophysics, CENPA, has an outstanding full-time opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer.
The mechanical engineer will play a key role in the center’s workflow by developing novel ideas for state-of-the-art physics instrumentation from conception to realistic designs to production in the local machine shop. The work will be performed in a stimulating atmosphere in close collaboration with scientists, students, electrical engineers and engineering technicians at CENPA. Some activities will be carried out within the context of larger multi-institutional, international collaborations in which CENPA plays a central role. The CENPA mechanical engineer provides a unique training resource for our students.
CENPA, is a “Center of Excellence” funded by the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Physics. It serves as the institutional home for a broad program of research in fundamental physics. Research activities are conducted locally and at remote sites. In neutrino physics, CENPA is a leading institution for large-scale off-site projects (KATRIN, LEGEND-200), while the novel Project 8 experiment is developed on-site. The Muon Physics Group has a major leadership role in the measurement of the muon’s anomalous magnetic moment at Fermilab. The CENPA program also includes studies using the local tandem Van de Graaff accelerator. Beyond the research directly supported by the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Physics, CENPA has a broader research scope that includes searches for the electric dipole moment, a precision gravity program and major dark matter experiments (ADMX and DAMIC).
CENPA is home to a large number of faculty, research faculty, postdoctoral researchers, graduate, and undergraduate students. The professional engineering and technical staff provide diverse competences and skills for state-of-the-art detector and instrumentation development, design, prototyping and construction. Our Center’s capabilities cover every detail for the successful execution of physics experiments, including mechanics, electronics, UHV techniques and cryogenics.
Work with faculty and the CENPA community to conceptualize and design systems, assemblies and parts to meet challenging one-of-a-kind requirements.
Perform stress and thermal analysis using both analysis software and analytical estimates.
Design of mechanical, vacuum and cryogenic systems.
Build, Test and Maintain
Supervise engineering technicians to produce professional CAD models and verify the quality of the drawings before production.
Work closely with the CENPA Machine Shop and technicians in the fabrication and assembly.
Test parts and final assemblies to ensure they meet the overall system requirements and are built to print. Train students and staff in performing commissioning tests.
Specify and procure commercial mechanical materials, parts and assemblies.
Develop and implement plans for engineering-related work, including management of timeline, budget, and schedule of deliverables.
In the case of projects that require multi-institutional collaboration, coordinate and integrate the CENPA engineering-related work with the engineering activities at other institutions.
Provide direction to researchers in the execution of research activities and engage in joint design optimization (e.g., feasibility of design, engineering, and fabrication concepts; use of alternative engineering approaches).

Application Process: The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process. These assessments may include Work Authorization, Cover Letter and/or others. Any assessments that you need to complete will appear on your screen as soon as you select “Apply to this position”. Once you begin an assessment, it must be completed at that time; if you do not complete the assessment you will be prompted to do so the next time you access your “My Jobs” page. If you select to take it later, it will appear on your "My Jobs" page to take when you are ready. Please note that your application will not be reviewed, and you will not be considered for this position until all required assessments have been completed.
Founded in 1861, the University of Washington is one of the oldest public institutions in the west coast and one of the preeminent research universities in the world. The University of Washington is a multi-campus university comprised of three different campuses: Seattle, Tacoma, and Bothell. The Seattle campus is made up of sixteen schools and colleges that serve students ranging from an undergraduate level to a doctoral level. The university is home to world-class libraries, arts, music, drama, and sports, as well as the highest quality medical care in Washington State and a world-class academic medical center. The teaching and research of the University’s many professional schools provide undergraduate and graduate students the education necessary toward achieving an excellence that will serve the state, the region, and the nation. As part of a large and diverse community, the University of Washington serves more students than any other institution in the Northwest.
