Additional experience in electronic equipment repair, installation, and fabrication. Demonstrate knowledge of National Fire Protection Association codeÂ NFPA70: National Electrical Code, in particularÂ NFPAÂ 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Experience with circuit board repair at component level with thru-hole and surface mount parts.
Ames Laboratory is a Department of Energy funded national laboratory operated through contractual agreement with Iowa State University. The Electronics Technician II position is within the Facilities and Engineering Department.
Under general supervision the incumbent designs, constructs, modifies, maintains, and tests complex electronic equipment and components in a national laboratory research environment or other university programs and services.Â This individual is also responsible for the oversight and safe use of electronic equipment purchased and used for research purposes.Â Finally, this individual is the subject-matter-expert (SME) as it relates to all things involving electrical equipment at Ames Laboratory (i.e., safety walkthroughs, equipment inspections, safety interlock systems, safe use of electrical equipment in the workplace).
The successful candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively with staff, scientists, students, and the public in order to provide excellent customer service. Knowledge of occupational hazards and the ability to incorporate appropriate safety precautions is important to success in the position.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
â¢ Designs and builds electronic circuits for experimental or research apparatus and instrumentation.
â¢ Prepares schematics and wiring diagrams.
â¢ Performs development of electronic circuits and makes a layout for a printed circuit board once design is finalized.
â¢ Makes prototypes and final models of designed and developed circuits, which includes the population of printed circuit boards.
â¢ Documents circuits with schematics, data and graphs to describe and illustrate system's operating characteristics.
â¢ Recommends purchase of new equipment and instructs operators in the use and implementation of equipment.
â¢ Diagnoses problems, performs repair and other forms of maintenance of complex electronic equipment and instruments such as oscilloscopes, meters, generators, counters, analog computers and specialized instrumentation equipment.
â¢ Calibrates and adjusts electronic equipment to insure optimum performance.
â¢ Maintains inventory and recommends or orders materials, components and supplies.
â¢ Directs, trains and assists other employees in related electronics work, as required.
â¢ Attends workshops and conferences to keep abreast of developments in the field.
