This position is being recruited at the State banded role/competency of an Electronics Specialist/Journey with a working title of Motor Drive and Starter Technician. The primary purpose of this position is to operate and maintain building HVAC and associated systems with an emphasis on Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) and motor starters primarily for fan, pumps, and related equipment. In performing these duties, it is critical the employee demonstrate the TOPSERVICE values of Teamwork, Openness, Professionalism, Stewardship, Excellence, Responsiveness, Versatility, Innovation, Competence, and Efficiency. Employees must also contribute to the UNC safety culture and consider safety first always.
Education and Experience:
Associate’s degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
This position requires an associate's degree in electronics or equivalent combination of training and experience. Candidates must have a working knowledge of single and three phase electrical and electronic circuits, the design and operation of motor starters and VFDs, and the design and operation of motor control systems related to HVAC fans and pumps. This includes knowledge of the National Electric Code, NFPA 70E arc flash safety, and the ability to read and interpret electrical control circuit schematics. Required skills include the ability to troubleshoot and repair electrical circuits for motor starters, VFDs, and motors, as well as skills to calibrate electrical and electronic control systems. Employees must have the ability to replace faulty components, wiring (including assisting in installations/running conduit/pulling wire), and test and adjust systems to achieve maximum energy efficiency and reliability. Electrical safety skills such as lockout/tagout are essential.
This position requires the ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions require the University to close.
This position is required to work in healthcare facilities, with requirements including vaccines, tuberculosis testing, and overall medical certification.
At least one (1) year of experience in the installation, operation, and maintenance of motor starters and VFDs.
Candidates with four or more years of experience in industrial or institutional equipment are preferred.
