The Director of Business serves as a senior staff member and provides strategic leadership for the Department of Chemistry. This position manages daily administrative operations, in addition to having primary responsibility for all financial activities for Chemistry, including but not limited to, budget preparation, financial planning, establishment of adequate internal controls and processes, and management of all IU, IU Foundation, and externally funded accounts. Staff management and operations oversight are critical components of this role, including staff training to ensure compliance with university, College, and department policies.
This position ensures that the department follows all university financial and fiscal policies and procedures, as well as compliance with guidelines associated with externally sponsored funding. Approves (or delegates approval for) all transactions, participates in financial planning, provides advice on proposed initiatives, and develops budgets including financial reporting. Reports directly to the Chair of the Department of Chemistry and works closely with staff members in the College Finance Office regarding financial matters related to Chemistry.
Bachelor's degree in Business, Public Administration or Accounting and five years of administrative and management experience with institutional budgeting and planning, financial policies, purchasing, travel, contracts and grants, and auditing.
Combinations of education and related experience may be considered.
Strong organizational and multitasking skills including the ability to manage multiple priorities at once with frequent interruptions. Comprehensive understanding of university and departmental operating policies. Ability to plan over multiple years. Problem solving skills with ability to conclude resolutions in a timely and efficient manner. Ability to effectively manage and work with diverse populations with a range of skills and personalities, including faculty, staff, other departments, and administrators, in a professional, diplomatic, and informed manner. Proficient in IU, IU Foundation, and external funding accounting as well as with IU HR policies for faculty and staff. Ability to quickly master knowledge of departmental activities, faculty, staff, and students. Ability to exercise sensitivity and confidentiality.
MBA / MPA. Experience in managing a large department, school, or institute.
Working Conditions / Demands
Standard Office environment. A high degree of mental concentration and broad conceptual judgment is required to properly perform the duties of the position.
$75,000 - $80,000
