This position involves professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and/or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, and documentation. Engineering Technicians may be assigned duties within a single discipline (e.g., electrical) or span a range of disciplines.
40% Under general supervision applies engineering knowledge to conduct tests on asphalt concrete specimens with several servo-hydraulic and pneumatic testing machines, including four fatigue testing machines, one shear machines and one Hamburg machine. Also, operates universal testing machine to test concrete specimens. Assists and supervises other testing engineers with cross training and maintenance equipment. Each machine requires customized set up for every experiment and engineering judgment each time they are run. Develops and modifies testing protocols as required for various equipment. Maintains, calibrates, and troubleshoots the machines, including their electronic controls and programmable testing software. Intervenes as necessary to protect the machine and preserve specimens. Work may need to be conducted on a non-routine schedule, and may require evenings and/or weekend hours.
20% Under general supervision and review, participates in engineering and mathematical analysis of experimental data, using spreadsheets and statistical software to fully evaluate specimen performance. Independently performs more complex analyses with additional software tools.
20% Contributes to summary reports and technical memorandums by explaining sophisticated test results in intelligible language. Prepares graphs, charts, and slides for presentations to clients and management.
10% Assists with field work throughout the State, which includes coring pavements, backfilling holes, carrying equipment and supplies to fellow field crew members, and running sophisticated field test equipment to measure pavement surface properties. Work is conducted on an as-needed basis, including evening and weekends hours, along highways in all parts of California.
10% Promotes safety by reviewing and updating operating procedures for the testing machines, including contingency plans for electrical outages, leaks, or other potential hazards. Serves as emergency contact person for machines of specialization, such as the fatigue, shear, or Hamburg testing machines. Performs safety checks and provides individualized safety instruction to junior staff to ensure maintenance of safety consciousness within the laboratory.
Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional design work of limited scope and complexity.
Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of priciples, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.

Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.
BS in Civil Engineering or equivalent knowledge and experience.
12 months experience in asphalt laboratory research.
Ability to learn to use sophisticated hydraulic/pneumatic test equipment
Ability to learn test data reduction and analysis
Basic knowledge of engineering statistics.
Ability to perform computer graphing of engineering data.
Requires effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner with researchers, technicians and undergraduate assistants.
Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds with assistance.
Advanced degree in Civil Engineering
Knowledge of testing methods of asphalt concrete, asphalt binders, or other pavement materials.
Knowledge of basic asphalt production methods
Ability to perform physical work in varied outdoors conditions.
At least one semester/quarter course in pavement engineering.
Training in or knowledge of AASHTO/Caltrans standard test procedures for asphalt, concrete, aggregate, and soil.

The salary range designated for this position: $67,500 - $98,900; however, starting salary will be commensurate with experience.
