The Department of Public Works, whose mission is to provide the community with quality services, maintain and improve our public infrastructures and facilities, and support the preservation of Marin's unsurpassed beauty, seeks an Advanced Systems Engineer. There are two (2) full-time (75 bi-weekly hours) vacancies for an Advanced Systems Engineer in the Communications Division, Department of Public Works.
The Communications Division provides multiple levels of service for public safety communications systems. These systems comprise of over 10,000 equipment units. There are 35 fire stations, 14 mountaintop sites, 6 dispatch centers and numerous other locations with facilities maintained by this division. Customer agencies include Marin Emergency Radio Authority (MERA) agency members, Cities/Agencies within Marin County, and all contracts associated with these functions.
The Advanced Systems Engineer (ASE) works with the Communications Network Systems Analyst to maintain and administer the virtual and physical local and wide area communications network environments, including computer and server hardware, systems software, applications software, security protocols, and development of configurations. The ASE implements and enforces communications network security measures to protect data, software and hardware. This includes installing and maintaining local-area networks (LAN), Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN), wide-area networks (WAN), and virtual Wide Area Networks (VWAN) associated with the MERA system. The ASE will provide technical support for complex projects along with system reports and statistics. The ASE has responsibility for preparing accurate estimates of time and materials required for assigned projects and is expected to read and understand network schematics associated with the projects.
Our Highly Qualified Candidate: The highly qualified candidate has directly related experience in the following areas: WAN & LAN design and implementation, Active Directory management, Network troubleshooting, Networking test equipment and Cyber Security. The ideal candidate exercises substantial initiative, judgment and expertise in the performance of their duties, digs beneath the obvious to get at the facts, even when not asked to do so, creates opportunities or minimizes potential problems by anticipating and preparing for these in advance, and seeks out and/or accepts additional responsibilities in the context of the position.
The ideal candidate has managed projects successfully, including managing budgets, project resources and delivering project outcomes on schedule. The candidate has strong writing skills with experience preparing a variety of correspondences and reports, including statistical reports and project recommendations. The ideal candidate will act as a positive role model for staff and will demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate and maintain successful working relationships with local public agencies, county personnel and members of the public.
Possession of at least one valid license or certificate as listed is highly desirable: CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, CompTIA Server+; Cisco CCNA; ETA Information Technology Security; ETA Network Systems Technician; ETA Computer Service Technician; ETA Data Cabling Installer; ETA Fiber To Any Antenna; ETA Fiber Optics Installer; ETA Termination and Testing Technician; ETA General Communications Technician; FCC General Radio Telephone Operator’s License
We recognize your time is valuable, so please do not apply if you do not have at least the following required Minimum Qualifications: Any four-year combination of recent professional experience and/or relevant computer science coursework that demonstrates the necessary knowledge and abilities. A typical way of achieving these requirements would be graduation with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited program in computer science or a related field.
Fifteen (15) semester units of computer science coursework from an accredited program and in a discipline relevant to the assignment is equivalent to a full year of related professional experience that has provided the required knowledge and abilities of the role.
Required education may be substituted with related professional experience on a year for year basis.
Internships completed in conjunction with coursework are excluded from being credited towards work experience, if they are counted towards educational requirements.
Recent experience is defined as experience gained, in part, in the last five years or longer, if technically relevant.
Special Requirements: The successful candidate will be required to successfully complete a background investigation (LiveScan – Department of Justice). Incumbents must have the ability to work nights, weekends, holidays and at odd or irregular hours for extended periods of time in either on-call or emergency conditions. Incumbents must stand 24-hour on-call duty as assigned on a rotating basis to respond to all alerts, alarms and calls related to County-maintained equipment and systems.
