Position Summary: Performs maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repairs of fiber optic cable and equipment.
Follows all safety rules and procedures.
Performs installation of fiber optic cable and equipment.
Effectively operates all fiber optic testing, troubleshooting and locating equipment.
Preps and splices various types and sizes of fiber optic cable.
Examines and replaces faulty and old fiber optic cables.
Organizes, schedules and performs maintenance routines.
Follows and interprets maps, specifications and staking sheets.
Ability to climb and work at elevations, including from ladders and aerial bucket trucks.
Complies with Cooperative’s policies prohibiting harassment and discrimination. Complies with Cooperative’s Drug Free Workplace policy, and complies with all policies, safety rules and procedures; and immediately reports possible violations to department VP and VP of HR and Benefits.
Attends safety meetings as required. Participates in other training to stay abreast of best practices.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Equipment Requirements (must be able to effectively use):
Ability to install, maintain, remove fiber optic drop or mainline cable
Ability to splice any type of fiber optic cable to industry quality standard
Ability to acquire knowledge of the fiber distribution system in the service area, such as locations of lines, splice points, recovery loops, electronic equipment, etc.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret electrical/distribution circuits, staking sheets and work orders
Ability to climb utility poles and work from elevated surfaces
Ability to work for prolonged periods of time in personal protective equipment
Ability to effectively communicate with crews, members and the public
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
Knowledgeable of service territory, GPS mapping system and TWACS AMR.
Knowledgeable of National Electric Safety Code, OSHA and DOT regulations
Ability to safely and properly use tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment required for maintenance and repairs
Ability to exercise independent judgement within parameters of the Cooperative’s policies/procedures
Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, both internally and externally
Physical Requirements (must be able to):
Use both hands and fingers; grip; twist; reach above the head; bend, balance or stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and sit and stand for long periods of time; lift, carry, push and pull weights up to 100 lbs.
Working Conditions (must be able to):
Work eight hours per day, five days a week
Work overtime as needed, including weekends, nights and holidays
Regularly works outside and is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions
