The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Specialist works under the direction of the Assistant Director of the Animal Research Protection Program (ARPP) in the day-to-day management of Brown's animal care and use program. This position independently reviews animal care and use protocols, interacting closely with Principal Investigator (PIs), IACUC members and veterinarians to ensure regulatory and policy requirements are followed. The IACUC Specialist designs and conducts outreach and education programs for PIs, laboratory managers, and other research team members to improve protocol submission quality and facilitate expeditious reviews and approvals. This position will stay apprised of regulatory changes and recommend ways to reduce administrative burden and increase efficiency.
Conducts in-depth pre-review of submitted research protocols and works with investigators and their support staff to develop complete, accurate protocols that comply with institutional policy and governing regulations.
Develops and implements outreach and education programs for faculty and staff submitting animal research protocols;
Works directly with the IACUC Chair, IACUC members and Animal Care staff to ensure timely review and approval of new protocols, amendments, annual reviews, and de-novo reviews.Â
Leads the semiannual program review and facility inspection process.
Drafts policies for IACUC approval to increase transparency regarding regulatory requirements and IACUC expectations and promote researcher compliance; conducts gap analyses to determine which policies / guidance documents to prioritize, including identifying gaps that arise as a result of evolving regulations.
Communicates policies to investigators and research teams
Conducts post approval monitoring visits in collaboration with the Assistant Director and IACUC Manager to ensure regulatory compliance is upheld.
Attends all IACUC meetings; records notes resulting from IACUC discussion to inform required revisions to protocols and policies; anticipates needs of the IACUC, IACUC Chair, and Attending Veterinarian by reviewing agenda items for upcoming meetings and researching / summarizing relevant background information to facilitate discussion and inform decision-making.
Bachelor's degree or degree in a scientific field and/or public policy; research experience desirable, 2-4 years of related administrative experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Â Prior relevant experience (in animal research, animal technician, sponsored projects administration) preferred.Â Scientific experience and CPIA certification desirable, but not required.
Proficiency in working with electronic databases and tracking systems
Demonstrated knowledge of the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, PHS Policy on Humane care and Use of Laboratory Animals, USDA AWA and Animal Welfare Regulations, and the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC)
Strong organizational and time management skills.Â Must be detail-oriented. Initiative and judgment to independently problem solve and prioritize.
Ability to independently develop and implement short and long-term goals and also work as a member of a team.
Demonstrated ability to research, analyze and summarize complex information.Â Demonstrated facility with interpreting regulations.
Customer-service focused approach with strong interpersonal skills. Highly effective oral and written communication skills necessary.
Frequently operates a computer and other office equipment such as a printer/copy machine.
Frequently moves about campus to various locations for meetings.
