Position Summary The Electric Engineering Technician 2 is a skilled and competent position with training and experience to perform electric engineering calculations, electric distribution line design and costing for large and/or complex distribution line extension projects for residential, commercial and industrial services, upgrades, retirements, relocations and system maintenance, in accordance with NESC and CoServ construction design standards and specifications; manages field surveying of projects, along with acquisition of easements and permits as required; meet and communicate with Members/Customers, Builders, Developers, City, County, State officials and utility companies; maintains a high level of professionalism and provides courteous and prompt service to CoServ Members/Customers and co-workers. The position requires thorough knowledge of Work Management and GIS systems.
Primary Position Responsibilities • Meet and communicate with Members/Customers, Builders, Developers, City, County, State officials, and utility companies to answer questions, provide information, resolve problems, and coordinate activities regarding construction of projects. • Designs single phase, three phase and multi-circuit underground and overhead lines and services for residential, commercial, retail, industrial, and development projects. • Generates construction plans using Designer/Work Management System and AutoCAD software to prepare drawings and staking sheets with detailed measurements and relative geographic features, specifying size, type and quantity of standard construction units and materials, specifying size and type of conductors, equipment and devices, and specifying any other notes or details relevant to the construction of the project. • Provides construction plans by preparing electronic drawings, staking sheets and other documentation in detail to facilitate construction of the project in a timely and efficient manner, according to NESC and CoServ design, construction standards and specifications. • Performs field services, staking and surveying by acquiring field measurements; placing stakes and other markers to identify the locations of poles, anchors, lines, equipment and devices; obtaining right of way easements from property owners; requesting utility locates; obtaining applicable city, state, county and federal permits; determining and coordinating right of way tree clearing and trimming required. • Produces electrical designs by determining size, type, quantity and physical placement of electric lines; equipment and devices, including primary and secondary conductors, single phase and three phase transformers, metering, protective and sectionalizing devices, light and heavy overhead and underground construction. • Prepares calculations, drawings, and other documentation to support electrical and structural design. • Prepares construction cost estimates by applying appropriate credits according to CoServ’s Tariff for customer service requests. • Takes initiative to monitor and follow-up on work order related issues with other CoServ Departments, Members/Customers, City, County and State officials; resolves design and construction issues by informing customers of electric line routing, voltage, current (amps) availability, and site requirements. • Continually documents work order history in CoServ’s Work Management System. Such documentation consists of emails, phone and face-to-face conversations, issues and status updates. • Maintains quality service by applying and specifying appropriate electrical equipment and devices according to CoServ design and construction specifications; Coordinating and communicating with Engineering System Planning group to obtain direction on project designs relative to short range and long-range distribution system improvements. • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by developing a thorough understanding of those sections of the latest editions of the NESC, NEC, OSHA and other local codes and ordinances applicable to the job functions performed by this position; follows CoServ, Rural Utility Services, state, federal and other regulatory agency procedures and rules in the performance of all work. • Contributes to team effort by assisting in training new hires in surveying, staking, and design work to maintain guidelines as directed by the Engineering Tech Supervisor; participating, communicating, and cooperating with other departments in cross-departmental projects and initiatives; taking on additional duties and tasks on a temporary or permanent basis as needed to support and/or assist other departments and/or to realize organizational efficiencies. • Responsible for inspection, maintenance and security of company assigned vehicle. • Wears rubber gloves and sleeves, hard hat, goggles, safety glasses, proper work attire and other required safety equipment. • Proficient in operating the RD7000 cable locator, property pin locator and survey transit and associated equipment. • Opens energized equipment to verify connections, collect name plate information and confirm available space for additional conduits and conductors. • Complies with established CoServ safety and operating rules, procedures, and guidelines. Responsible for reporting unsafe practices to a supervisor. • Complies with established CoServ Information Security Handbook, policies, procedures, and guidelines. Responsible for reporting suspected information security incidents to Client Services.
Secondary Position Responsibilities • Mentor new Electric Engineering Technicians. • Self-motivated, take ownership of job responsibilities, and be pro-active in seeking solutions for the department. • Ability to promote teamwork concepts and get along cordially with customers and co-workers. • Assume team leadership roles within the Engineering Services department as directed by management. • Attend Engineering Services meetings, power distribution conferences and other educational workshops and meetings appropriate to this position as assigned by management.

Experience Required • 4 years of electric distribution experience or 2 to 4 years of experience in Electrical Distribution staking and design.
