Our LABORATORY MEDICINE DEPARTMENT has an outstanding full-time position for a LABORATORY GENETIC COUNSELOR. The person in this role will perform the following duties:ResearchCoordinate the laboratory's program for enhanced cascade testing Interview patients to determine study eligibilityAssist patients in building pedigrees and connecting with other study participantsReview genetic test reports before release to patients and research participantsCoordinate indicated follow-up genetic testing of at-risk family members of research participantsAssist with the resolution of sample testing issues, such as consent and sample shipment, receipt, inadequate specimens, questions regarding variants, and research enrollmentMaintain and update research participant lists and pedigreesQualitative and quantitative analysis of data research dataContribution to abstracts and scientific manuscriptsDevelop content for online research resources such as connectmyvariant.orgCollaborate with statistical geneticists, laboratory technicians and other genetic counselorsParticipates in study design.Accountable for compliance of study in regards to IRB protocols and other regulatory research bodies.Client RelationsProvide information, technical assistance and guidance on test availability, composition, selection, and interpretationParticipate in laboratory's program for analyzing variants of uncertain significance.Coordinate indicated follow-up testing of at-risk family membersAssist with the resolution of next-generation sequencing testing issues, such as inadequate specimens, questions regarding variants, and research enrollmentAttend national meetings as representative of UW Lab MedicineMaintain and update patient and provider materials and webpagesLaboratory OperationsReview next-generation sequencing test orders for urgency and accuracyObtain relevant patient clinical history for case review and interpretationCompose reports with laboratory medical directors and genetic counselorsReview reports before release into laboratory information system and EMRParticipate in scientific and quality-assurance studies and research related to the laboratory's servicesAdministrative and Quality Improvement OperationsParticipate in development and implementation of new or improved clinical test services based on next-generation sequencingParticipate in ongoing literature review to incorporate latest knowledge into the clinical classification of genes and gene variantsProvide clinical support to billing department, including case review documentation of medical necessity, as part of the pre-authorization processSupport research testing grants and contracts related to the laboratoryAssist with review, maintenance, and update of billing codesHelp develop and implement improvements in electronic reporting of test resultsRequirementsMaster's Degree in Genetics AND 2-3 years clinical or research experience in genetics.DesirablesBoard eligibility or certification by American Board of Genetic CounselingLicensed or eligibility for license as Genetic Counselor in Washington StateExperience with cascade testing in familiesExperience with family history and genealogyExperience with qualitative research techniquesClinical cancer genetics experience Experience with next-generation sequencing-based testing desirableSpecific knowledge of the NGS tests available in system such as BROCA
