The Equipment Technician Specialist for the Department of Mechanical Engineering will perform semi-complex jobs of a mechanical nature. assist faculty and students in conducting tasks and experiments or research projects, manufacture parts from CAD drawings, prints or verbal instructions as well as enforcing safety standards in the shop and ordering parts.
Perform semi-complex jobs of a mechanical nature.
Manufacture, fit, and assemble parts from steel, aluminum, or other non-metallic materials from CAD drawings, prints, or from verbal instruction to a required tolerance.
Manufacture parts consisting of gears, all makes of threads, shafts, adapters, jigs, and fixtures to very close tolerances.
Assist faculty and students in conducting tasks and experiments and assist faculty with research projects.
Orders parts for machine shop use, may help order mechanical or specimen-type parts for other departmental labs.
Enforce safety standards in the shop, and may be asked to do departmental inventory, and will help coordinate departmental waste disposal.
Provides support to departmental laboratories and performs necessary maintenance on departmental lab equipment where possible.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor?s degree in Mechanical Engineering or applicable field
Five years of related experience in an instructional environment

Experience with and/or a strong desire to learn to conduct CNC, 3D printing, laser cutting, basic electronics, or electrical wiring and can help with basic electrical and electronics/mechatronics laboratory systems upgrades or student projects.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications.
Knowledge of manufacturing processes, machining fabrication, tool design, and robotics.
Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to fabricate instructional procedures
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Ability to machine or fabricate a wide variety of metallic and non-metallic components using manually operated end mills, lathes, saws, welders, grinder, etc, and is willing to repair and/or upgrade such machines.
Ability to create and modify drawings using typical CAD software
Ability to advise students on better ways to fabricate components, able to mentor students, showing them the basics of machining and machine repairs, and is able to balance student demands on time and pass on key skills.
