Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
Cooperative Extension at N.C. A&T helps people across the state lead better lives by finding solutions to their problems. We deliver educational programs and technology to enrich the lives, the land and the economy of North Carolina's limited-resource individuals, families and communities. The Small Farm Unit is one of the research units with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems. The Center is a three-way partnership between North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and North Carolina State University. The Small Farm Unit covers approximately 30 acres with a wide range of soil types, equipment, buildings and educational focal points. The function of the unit is to model a systems-based approach within a whole farm context. Embedded within the farm design are ongoing research projects in systems rotation and other production topics relevant to small farm stakeholders. Farm produce is donated to local community organizations, food kitchens, and shelters. Farm transplants are grown in a greenhouse. The unit composts organic waste, which is incorporated into the farm's fertility management strategy. The Small Farm Unit includes a 15-acre certified organic area and a postharvest handling area. Current projects include various short- and long-term research projects such as mixed vegetable enterprise budget studies, greenhouse and high tunnel monitoring (testing various season extension techniques), organic transplant production, organic systems work (utilizing various cover crops as part of whole season rotation), and entomology projects (studying agricultural pests' life cycles). Cooperative Extension is unique in structure and function. Through the expertise of specialists, associates and county-based agents, Extension is the outreach arm of the University and its School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Our programs are developed here at the campus level and then delivered to people through our 101 Cooperative Extension centers across the state.
