The EMCS (Energy Management Control Systems) Operator will operate, maintain, and back up a complex multi-vendor, multi-protocol Energy Management, HVAC Control, and Building Automation System with computerized process control systems communicating via Internet Protocols (IP) on the Campus Ethernet backbone to monitor HVAC and energy management systems, control points, and objects located in Campus buildings. More specifically, oversee, operate and maintain Building Control Systems and support operational requirements of the HVAC shops with such systems; maintain extended coverage of the EMCS Operations Center to respond to Building Control System operational requirements and to act as a first responder for HVAC emergency needs outside of normal business hours; maintain databases for HVAC/EMCS Computer Control Equipment and Energy Management Systems; develop control programs, graphics, user view's for Building Control Systems and participate in in-house Building Control System programming and installation; implement load shedding and coordinate load shedding activity between multiple shops; coordinate new control system design and installation to ensure compatibility and operational capability meet HVAC/EMCS requirements; maintain campus Energy Management Building Automation Systems and Schedules via the use of the HVAC/EMCS Computerized Control Systems (Schneider, TAC, Johnson Controls and others); monitor campus buildings to insure occupancy schedules are working, valves and dampers are closing and opening properly to insure the campus operates in the most energy efficient and environmentally safe manner possible; log findings and incidents in electronic log book to keep everyone informed and to have work orders generated to fix problems; coordinate network connections with vendors and technicians; provide triage support and technical support to HVAC technicians with building control issues; perform gate and door lock inspection on facilities services gates and shop doors once nightly.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Optional Guidelines: experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Knowledge of Building Automation Systems, HVAC control sequences, utility distribution systems, computer networks, and Energy Management strategies including energy analysis (triage). Skilled in troubleshooting HVAC control systems, electrical interlocks, IT network issues, operating computer programs and applications, interpreting and organizing complex data sets, and creating reports from collected data. Ability to concisely communicate pertinent information verbally and in writing.
This is a severe weather essential position. Weather conditions and emergencies, and University needs may require employees designated as severe weather essential to be at work even when the university is closed, to assist in returning the campus and buildings to a safe and secure environment for the campus community.
The preferred candidate will have a minimum of five years progressive experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling equipment, chilled water distribution systems and HVAC or process control systems desired. An associate degree or specialized certificate in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), Refrigeration, Engineering Technology, Information Technologies or Computer Networking is highly desirable. Experience with commercial or institutional HVAC and/or control systems is preferred. Familiarity of HVAC and electrical systems trouble shooting preferred. Familiarity with LONMARK and Bacnet networks is highly desirable. Familiarity with the basics of TCP/IP networks, SQL databases and experience in using Windows operating systems and Microsoft office applications in networked environments is preferred. Familiarity with data logging equipment, specialized tools and equipment used for repair and commissioning of HVAC equipment and the skills to use those tools. Familiarity with drawing tools and graphic generation a plus. Familiarity with point mapping in DDC control systems a plus. Familiarity with energy management conservation measures and strategies is a big plus. CFC certification, HVAC or Electrical License, IT certifications, Windows certifications are desirable.
