Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC), a progressive south metro member-owned utility with 90 employees, is seeking a Metering Technicianto join the team. A Metering Technician maintains metering equipment and meter reading equipment, performs member side residential power quality studies in a safe, accurate, and timely manner, and provides members, contractors, and local utilities with safe and reliable service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs assigned work as Metering technician with minimal supervision. This shall include the operation, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of metering equipment, automated metering equipment, and load management equipment. These shall follow MVEC specifications, safety rules, and general operating procedures.
Follows established steps and procedures as directed, checking if necessary, with Lead when a departure from established methods or orders is imminent.
Install, maintain, and utilize software to assure proper function of equipment.
Assist line crews with proper installation of multi-phase transformers installs
Perform tests on meters and related devices to assist with problems related to metering, billing and energy use issues.
Installation of power quality equipment to assist with residential member issues.
Perform automated meter reading equipment installations/programming, calibration, and maintenance.
Support outside contractor for residential demand responds repairs
Perform field meter testing and inspection, including field inspections of single-phase metering for wiring correctness, tampering, energy diversion, and accuracy.
Develop good working knowledge of MVEC, REA, NEC codes, and specifications, and internal MVEC operations, i.e., mapping system and staking sheets; seek opportunities to learn and keep current on overall operations and procedures related to position.
Participate actively in established safety training and instruction programs; consistently apply what is presented in terms of safety codes, rules, and procedures.
Become skilled in first-aid/CPR.
Recognize the interdependency of crew members is an absolute necessity for safe working conditions on the job. Consistently apply safety practices to minimize accidents and hazards to MVEC personnel and the general public.
Recommend changes in procedures/practices to improve productivity and quality with no loss to safety, reliability, or service standards to MVEC members.
Maintain good working relationship with the general public on a regular basis
Perform collection or disconnection of services with delinquent balances as directed by Collections staff.
Completes service orders for special meter readings due to meter issues, rereads for accuracy or missing readings.
Back up to Metering Technician Lead as assigned metering duties
Assists in the work with line crews in emergency situations when called upon.
Installs necessary programs and maintaining them to assure proper use.
Seeks opportunities to learn and keep current on overall operations and procedures which relate to the Metering Technician position.
Maintains a good working knowledge of how MVEC is organized and how operations interact towards a coordinated work effort.
Participates actively in established safety training and instruction programs, consistently applies what is presented in terms of safety codes, rules, and procedures.
Education and Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
High school diploma or equivalent (required)
2 years electrical wiring experience (required)
2 year Electrical/ Electronic degree (preferred)
Experience with control equipment (preferred)
Works outdoors with physical exertion, often in poor weather conditions. Occasionally lifts materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weigh up to 100 pounds. Shovels dirt, works around noisy equipment, and visually inspects work for safe connections.
Occasionally works at night, on weekends, and holidays to repair or install lines, or perform emergency cable locates. Interacts with crew members, Foremen, and Supervisors via verbal communication. Works on uneven terrain in fields and along roads, often encountering vehicular traffic.
