A Cardiac Echo Technologist treats and diagnoses patients by using ultrasound equipment and other noninvasive echocardiography testing equipment. Cardiac Echo Technicians study a patient's image and look for any abnormalities in that image. They work closely with both physicians and patients to diagnose a variety of cardiovascular diseases, illnesses, and disorders.
Duties and Responsibilities
A Cardiac Echo Technologist is expected to practice safe procedures under the supervision of the Cardiologist. Specific duties may include but are not limited to:
Performs diagnostic cardiovascular and echocardiography examinations according to the department procedures.
Locates and records internal elements of the body, including blood vessels and organs, and identifies any anomalies indicative of disease, injury, or other medically significant condition.
Performs imaging and non-imaging cardiovascular evaluations, including exercise tolerance tests, Holter monitoring, event recorders, electrocardiograms, stress tests, and transesophageal echocardiography.
Adjusts equipment and calms patient to eliminate test artifacts. Instructs patients in pretest preparation answer questions and explain procedures.
Monitors the patient for potentially dangerous physical and emotional changes. Recognizes abnormal rhythms and immediately notifies the physician.
Evaluates test results for clarity and accuracy. Informs the physician of preliminary findings as requested, and according to department procedures. Distributes completed test results to physicians and service providers.
Maintains patient charts, enters a diagnosis, and billing codes, logs data into patient. information systems, and updates file systems for tests performed.
Cleans and sterilizes equipment and workspace. Recognizes equipment malfunctions and readjusts equipment or refers for repair.
Follow infection control and safety guidelines.
Perform vascular studies per department protocol.
Knowledge of diagnostic ultrasound equipment.
Knowledge of venous and arterial anatomy and disease process.
Knowledge of vascular examination protocols and patient preparation for evaluation.
Holter monitor equipment, event recorders, and other medical electronics and stress testing equipment.
Frequently move/lift between 50-100 pounds, depending on assignment requirements.
Stand for long periods with frequent squatting, twisting, bending, kneeling and reaching to prepare equipment, materials or objects in order to provide patient care or maintain the patient environment.
Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination.
Ability to work in a stressful environment.
Ability to follow directions/instructions from his/her supervisor.
Consistent attendance is required to assure that the client facilities’ needs and patient needs are met.
To comply with all client facilities’ policies, procedures, and practices.
Certification: Registered by American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), or CCI, Current CPR/BLS Certification
