Energy Management's goal is to cost effectively minimize Cornell's energy use and associated environmental impacts. The Energy Management staff work to identify and implement conservation focused outreach, maintenance, energy studies, and capital projects to meet the university's needs with less energy use. The Utilities section of Energy and Sustainability operates the University energy infrastructure system on a 24 hour, 365 day per year basis. Production facilities include a combined heat and power facility which provides both the steam for heat and electricity for campus. All of the water for campus is provided by a university owned potable water filtration plant. Electricity from the local utility is fed through a university owned electric substation. Utilities is also responsible for all of the distribution and collection systems located on campus including steam, chilled water, electricity, potable water and waste water.
Our Energy & Sustainability Department is searching for a motivated and hard-working individual to join their team in their Central Energy Plant as a Sr. Instrumentation & Controls Technician! As the Sr. I&C Technician, you will take a major role in maintaining utility related instrument and control equipment to ensure safe, reliable, efficient and environmentally compliant operation of the University Energy plants. This role performs these duties independently with limited supervision. In addition, the individual filling this position will be responsible for some other, still utilities systems based, activities such as:
Record keeping spare parts inventory
Responsibilities include repair, replacement, adjustment, calibration, lubrication, cleaning, rebuild and renewal of all structures and equipment to assure system reliability, efficiency and safety. This work will require the ability to read and interpret instruction manuals and prints, layout and fabricate work and order parts. The Senior Technician conducts routine maintenance, following established procedures and is frequently required to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and correct equipment deficiencies through innovative non-standard methods. Plan to provide functional supervision to maintenance work teams, including contractor personnel, manufacturer's representatives, and other Cornell employees and participate in other cross function activities in support of the Energy department.
This is a union position within the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE). The starting pay rate is $32.56/hour.
What we need:
An Associates degree in Instrumentation, Electrical Controls, Electronics or Electromechanical Technology or comparable technical field or equivalent experience is required. You must obtain special licenses, permits and/or certifications, as required. 3-5 years of experience in utility plants, working with electric and solid state electronic controls and experience with the operation and maintenance of personal computers are all necessities of this position. This individual ought to possess the ability to give and receive feedback, communicate honestly, listen and respect others, learn from mistakes, set high goals and achieve them, overcome obstacles, use time effectively, set priorities, and participate effectively on a team. You must be highly motivated and exhibit innovation, good judgement and reliability in the work place. You must also demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot equipment and system problems and take corrective action to eliminate and/or minimize loss of efficiency and damage to equipment and operation. If you obtain the ability to learn new technologies as new equipment and systems are introduced and to obtain any licenses required for compliance with state and federal regulations, please apply. What we'd prefer:
A NYS Pesticide Applicator's license, control system operation and maintenance experience, and experience specifically with Rockwell Automation, Modicon PLC's, Allen Bradley PLC's, and GE Proficy software are preferred qualifications of the person filling this role BUTif you don't have these, don't let that deter you from applying!
