DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL)was originally established as a Navy-oriented research laboratory in 1946 prior to becoming a division of Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1949. MPL has offices both on the Scripps campus and at Navy Base Point Loma/Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR). It is the only certified facility UC-wide for classified research and holdings. Research in MPL embraces observational ocean science with emphasis on developing state of the art instrumentation for studying ocean acoustic and seismic propagation, air-sea interaction, ocean volume dynamics and ocean bottom geophysics.
POSITION OVERVIEW Under general supervision, the Oceanographic Instrumentation Technician will operate and maintain oceanographic research instrumentation related to hydrophones, data recorders, and acoustic release transponders at sea and on shore. Prepare ocean-going mechanical, electronic, and computer equipment, including ordering parts and instrumentation assembly, testing, and shipping. Deploy, recover, refurbish, and evaluate quality of acoustic research equipment and acquired hydrophone data at sea from aboard various vessels including small boats or large ships. Coordinate the logistics related to using oceanographic instrumentation at sea, including working with ship, port, engineering, and scientific personnel.
