Essential Job Duties:
This Research Technician position works within the sweetpotato breeding and genetics program. The incumbent will work with the Program Lead and Research Scholars to plan all experiments, yield trials and plot designs for all plant breeding field trials. The incumbent will assist with the daily management of our conventional and genomic-assisted sweetpotato breeding program, including leading planting, crop management and harvest activities as needed. The incumbent will actively participate in on- and off-campus sweetpotato variety development activities with various public and private industry stakeholders. The incumbent will assist with the training and education of undergraduate and graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars. Occasional support of our laboratory-based breeding activities will also be expected and routine interaction with greenhouse, field and research station personnel is expected to ensure that all plant materials are well maintained.
Additional activities will include assisting graduate students and project members in the field and greenhouse plant breeding research activities. The incumbent may supervise and train of part-time employees, and report on field and greenhouse equipment needs.
Occasional travel to various research stations is required.

Highly motivated, self-starting, flexible team worker who has a demonstrated interest in plant breeding and cultivar development, and will be willing to learn and work with others or independently as needed, as well as be able to help supervise part-time workers
Basic to advanced understanding of plant breeding and genetics, experimental design principles, plant breeding data management needs, breeding nursery crossing designs, and field plot techniques in an agricultural research setting
Solid understanding of crop management principles involved in the production of horticultural field crops
Good organizational and time management skills, including the ability to develop and coordinate work schedules for others and respond to the demands of production agriculture
Able to work independently and precisely
Knowledge of computer applications for recording data in the field and greenhouse and ability to use this data to assist with the development of research reports and summaries
Familiarity with and ability to manage farm equipment and staff and must be able or willing to learn how to operate farm research equipment, including driving tractors and various project vehicles
Must have a solid understanding of crop cultural management techniques
Must be interested in assisting graduate students and project members in field and greenhouse plant breeding research activities, and be able to supervise and train of part-time employees, and report on field and greenhouse equipment needs
Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) or similar software, and basic computer hardware set-up and programming
Must be able to perform a physically demanding job in hot and humid greenhouse and field conditions while standing for long periods of time
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds safely for moving large containers of sweetpotatoes and potatoes, with or without reasonable accommodation
Ability to work non-standard hours including early mornings and evenings during the planting and harvest seasons and occasional weekends
Bachelor’s degree in Horticultural Science, Master’s degree in Plant Breeding or Genetics, or a related field with one or more years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
One or more years of relevant experience, especially in a field-based applied plant breeding program with relevant field, laboratory, and greenhouse operations and maintenance experience.
Experience in sweetpotato and potato production.
Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and basic computer hardware set-up and programming and electronic date capture methods.
Familiar with genomic-assisted breeding.
Ability to interact effectively with staff and stakeholders.
General knowledge and ability to work with and repair farm equipment.
Expertise in database use and electronic data capture and ability to manage and statistically analyze diverse data and a detail-oriented fast learner are highly desirable.
Required license or certification:
A valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of start date is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
