Power Plant Controls Specialist
The Controls Specialist maintains, inspects, adjusts, repairs, calibrates, and performs periodic preventative maintenance on automatic control devices and systems for three gas/oil fired high pressure boilers, a coal fired fluidized bed boiler, two steam driven chillers, four electric motor driven chillers, and related components. S/he should be able to assist others in any way possible to maintain a reliable and safe plant operation. Duties include but are not limited to:
Maintain, inspect, adjust, repair, and calibrate all automatic and manual controls, indicators, recorders, and controllers for all four boilers, six chillers, and associated plant equipment
Maintain, inspect, adjust, repair, and calibrate pneumatic, mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic automatic and manual controls for plant auxiliary equipment.
Maintain, adjust and calibrate water treating equipment for boilers, chilled water system, and cooling towers.
Assist electronic technician with calibration of electronic controls and preventative maintenance of electrical equipment.
Install new and maintain existing plant automatic control, compressed air, water, and hydraulic control piping.
High School Diploma or equivalent
Four or more years in the operation and maintenance of gas/oil and coal fired boilers and air conditioning equipment or the equivalent of training and experience
Must have one year of experience in maintaining automatic control systems
DC Steam Engineers 3rd Class License
Demonstrate the ability to use and understand the principals and practices of fluid flow and their relation to boiler and chiller controls
Adjust and later PLC programs as condition require
All basic hand tools, volt ohm meter, amp meter, various types of pneumatic and electronic calibrating equipment, manometers, boiler efficiency monitor, pipe threading machine, electric drills, frequency generator and counter, oscilloscope, hand and bench grinders, and cutting and welding torches; All of the above plus knowledge of combustion as it relates to oil, gas, and coal fired boilers
Work from drawings and be capable of systematically and logically locating the problem when drawings are not available
Automatic controls and control plant operation. If these controls aren't properly maintained a piece of equipment may be useless, even though there is nothing wrong with the basic unit
Controls not properly calibrated can waste thousands of dollars in energy consumed and energy produced; With today's costs, as they are, it is essential we have qualified personnel in this position
