NEC is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN. NEC is situated within the White Mountains of Arizona, 180 miles NE of Phoenix. It is a place of beautiful scenery and mild climate, with a small community atmosphere where you know your neighbors. The area abounds in opportunities for hiking, hunting, fishing and other outdoors sports.
Responsible for the proper installation, maintenance, and repair of NEC’s communication systems. This is skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair work of electronic communication equipment. Work of this class includes a variety of tasks requiring considerable knowledge of electronic communications theory and practice in providing the Cooperative with satisfactory communication service.
Install, maintain, and repair assigned NEC owned communications equipment related,but not limited to:
(b) Two-way land mobile radio services
(c) SCADA, metering and telemetry
(d) Transmission cabling, wiring, and fiber-optic mediums; line conditioning equipment, dehydrators, etc.
(e) Time-based synchronous communications systems e.g. GPS, IRIG-B
(f) Load-shedding devices
(g) Telephone system wiring
(h) Battery systems and UPS
(i) Power systems communications for generators.
(j) Tune transmitting and receiving units; test malfunctioning units, adjust or replace defective components; maintain and repair bench test equipment.
Maintain assigned NEC communications towers and buildings including equipment for battery power systems and grounding.
Climb towers to install and repair equipment, perform inspections, conduct all tights, perform load studies and host contractors doing the same work.
Assist with communication construction projects, make recommendations, escort and host contractors.
Responsible for assisting with customer Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) & Television Interference (TVI) complaints.
Must be able to travel to any point where needed to perform an inspection of equipment or to make a repair or adjustment.
Responsible for the knowledge, understanding and execution of all duties in accordance with Safety Rules and Policies as established by the NEC and OSHA regulations, etc., as well as for effecting adherence to such standards on the part of all personnel who may be under his/her supervision.
Prepare and Record FCC licensing and frequency coordination for new and existing stations assigned to ensure station licenses current.
Responsible for ordering supplies and maintaining an accurate record of the cost of repairs and up-keep of each type of equipment.
Accept call out duty for emergency calls after regular working hours.
Assists in the NEC’s RF Safety Plan and implementation.
Perform other related duties as may be assigned.
A. Formal Education
High School Education or equivalent.
Associate Degree in Electronics or comparable schooling.
B. Previous Job Experience
Four (4) years experience in all of the following fields:
(a) Two-way radio repair, maintenance and installation
(b) Modern radio, microwave telemetry, and control systems of the type utilized in electrical systems currently in use today.
(c) Must be familiar with National Electrical Code, NESC, electrical practices and procedures and current practices incurred with high voltage transmission lines.
C. Special Skills
Knowledge of practices, methods, materials and equipment used in electronic installation, maintenance, repair and testing required.
Knowledge of pertinent FCC rules and regulations required.
Knowledge of electrical and electronic communications theory.
Ability to read and understand plans, blueprints, sketches and schematics of communication and electronic equipment and other electrical apparatus is required.
Ability to locate and repair defects in radio, and microwave receiving and transmitting equipment is required.
Ability to perform strenuous physical work during long periods under adverse weather conditions is required.
Skill in the use of radio equipment and testing devices used in servicing such equipment.
Have or be able to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license.
Must possess a General Radiotelephone Operator License (GROL) or equivalent certification by the end of the third year of employment with the co-op.
Ability and knowledge of tower climbing skills and provisioning of antennas, cabling, and ancillary equipment.
Must possess a current Antenna Tower Safety Certificate or be able to obtain one within six months.
HOURS OF OPERATION:4/10s The cooperative is currently on a 4/10 schedule (Monday through Thursday).
SALARY: The rate of pay for a Communications Technician is $38.88 /hr.
