Essential Job Duties:
Engineer responsibilities include:
Execute a project to install, commission, and operate a new RFQ based Pulsed Accelerator Neutron Source Facility.
Utilize the engineering design process to develop and design hardware and software upgrades and infrastructure for the PANSF systems and sub-systems.
Generate specifications, procedures and other documentation related to the operation, safety, and maintenance of the RFQ accelerator systems.
Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all RFQ accelerator components and sub-systems as necessary, including RF amplifier chain and HV supply, duoplasmatron ion source, LabView based control system along with legacy TTL based control logic, cyro-pump high vacuum system, beam transport system, and target chamber.
Perform failure analysis on RFQ systems and sub-systems and propose and implement reliability upgrades, including designing upgraded control circuitry with LabView interface.
Optimize performance of RFQ systems and sub-systems to increase the RF duty factor up to 2.5%.
Optimize accelerator system particle beam transport optics to maximize beam current on target.
Interact with vendors and suppliers for the upgrade and repair of accelerator and experimental systems.
Work with technicians, machinists, and/or subcontractors.
Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Knowledge of operating principles and physics of RFQ proton / deuteron accelerators, including high and low power RF amplifier systems, amplifier circuitry, RF signal generation and impedance matching.
Knowledge of particle beam systems and transport optics, including accelerator beam focusing and bunching.
Knowledge of particle beam transport simulation software (e.g. SIMION and/or similar computer programs).
Experience working with ionizing radiation.
Knowledge of LabView application software and controls interfacing.
Ability to repair and troubleshoot legacy control electronics and other obsolete equipment including vacuum tube technology.
Proficient knowledge of office software programs including project planning, Outlook, Word, Excel.
Analytical thinker with excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
A minimum of 3 years of relevant technical experience in a particle accelerator based laboratory environment with demonstrated hands on experience with RF amplifier systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
