Position Summary: The Communications Engineering Assistant position develops design drawings and related specifications for standard engineering applications involving electronic systems for data and voice communications requirements, telemetering devices, and related communications equipment. The position performs independent design and system studies on specific projects under the direction of engineering staff. The position supports and assists engineers in the completion of communications project design and administration, data collection, and documentation.
Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities: Prepares and analyzes engineering drawings, specifications and system data to determine design factors on specific projects requiring communications related equipment including but not limited to: Digital microwave radio systems, VOIP telephone systems, Mobile radio systems, Fiber optic communications equipment, Digital multiplexing circuit equipment, IP based networking infrastructure, Landline telephony circuits, SCADA remote terminal units, Intelligent electronic devices (IED) and support equipment, Security systems, Video systems, General electronic miscellaneous systems. Performs the design of engineering projects under the general supervision of engineers using CAD drafting techniques. Develops and compiles all detailed drawings, cost estimates, and material lists to prepare work orders for communications related jobs. Maintains proficiency at Brazos communications related design software, accounting software, and general windows related software for work related tasks. Works closely with other engineering assistants and may give specific job-related direction. Processes data necessary to develop engineering planning reports and design studies. Participates and assists in data collection, field surveying and planning of systems facilities for the cooperative or member cooperatives. Calculates and organizes information for system studies and provides technical consultation for special projects. Maintains relationships with external contractors, consultants and member cooperative personnel to coordinate job related activity. Performs field related investigations, inspections, or monitoring. Performs special communications related assignments as required. Works closely with communications technicians on completion of design installations and testing. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of basic communications theory including but not limited to electronics or IP networking related information. Ability to develop procedures and practices, as well as the ability to recognize needs and identify key support resources. Ability to communicate effectively at a technical level. Skills must include strong interpersonal skills, as well as written and verbal communication skills and ability to understand information and ideas as presented. Ability to adapt to rapidly changing business circumstances; must be able to thrive in a constantly changing business environment. Ability to build and maintain effective work relationships, both internal and external, and establish credibility with business partners and others. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize time/workload to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to coordinate assignments and handle multiple complex tasks concurrently. Ability to self-motivate, working independently and as part of a team. Ability to physically perform the essential functions of the job. Skill and ability to use computers and related software for word processing, reporting, presentations, spreadsheets and e-mail.
Education and Experience Requirements: This position requires an associate degree in electronics, telecommunications, or computer networking related field from a recognized vocational/technical school. Minimum of four (4) years field related experience as an engineering technician or in a comparable position at Brazos Electric.
Physical and Environmental Requirements: This position requires working inside in a controlled environment and occasionally outside in varying weather conditions, sitting for extended periods of time, working overtime and traveling at times with short notice, hearing within normal range, hearing aids are permitted, vision within normal range, corrective lens are permitted a valid driver’s license.
