The Caruso Research Group at UMKC seeks qualified candidates for the position of Research Engineering Technician II (RETII). In this role, the successful candidate will support multiple aspects of R&D needs of the counter unmanned aerial vehicle group. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated creativity and versatility in designing solutions for complex mechanical, electrical, and computational problems; a curiosity and willingness to learn new methods, systems, and technologies; strong verbal and written communication skills; the ability to guide less experienced team-members; strong self-motivation; the ability to work independently as well as on a team; and, capability to organize and execute on parallel assignments according to aggressive deadlines, while maintaining safety as top priority.
Organizing and performing highly complex/skilled work in designing, constructing, installation, and/or repair of technical equipment and components;
Performing equipment installation/commissioning, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting;
Providing guidance and solutions for data collection in situations that are atypical or occur infrequently;
Use manual and/or CNC mill/lathe and other machine shop equipment to provide rapid-turnaround prototypes when main shop delivery is inadequate for program deadlines;
Provide a timely response to the needs of ongoing work, related assemblies design, and implementation;
Professional interactions with students and peers through verbal and written communications;
Presenting at and meeting with students, staff, and faculty to discuss design and operation of parts and systems;
Independent collection and analysis of experimental data as requested;
Continuous professional development and ability to complete required training;
Identifying deficiencies and proposing solutions for operational and technical needs of research activities;
Independently procuring materials, parts, and instruments based on solid understanding of the needs and objectives of the research;
Writing of technical summaries and/or reports as requested;
Maintaining a safe and secure work environment.
A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
B.S. degree in mechanical, electrical, or computer engineering and at least 5 years of experience in a research and development environment or equivalent;
Ability to hold and maintain a United States security clearance.
Experience in machining, mechanical design, prototyping, and/or, comparable certifications;
Experience collecting, plotting and summarizing experimentally derived data, from commercial and/or home built instrumentation;
Experience or certification in soldering and electronics/electrical repair or installation;
Strong LabVIEW, C++, python, or equivalent programming experience;
Familiarity with high-speed/RF measurement and instrumentation and analysis;
Experience in thermal management systems design and instrumentation;
Proficiency in creating 3D drawings using SolidWorks or comparable software;
Experience in welding, CNC programming, advanced electronics, lithography, single board computer or microprocessor operation/programming;
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint);
Currently/recently hold/held a United States security clearance.
$19.47 to be commensurate with experience.
Full time, Monday–Friday, 8 am – 5 pm or comparable. Culture of flexibility is supported.
