Posting Summary: The Department of Neurology at the University of Virginia is seeking a Laboratory Technician 1. The position carries out research studies and assists in experiments for the laboratory of Dr. Howard Goodkin, MD PhD. The role of this position is to perform and assist with studies investigation basic mechanisms of seizures and epilepsy in various epilepsy models. Responsibilities include working with small animals, laboratory procedures, assisting with collection and entry of data in electronic media and laboratory maintenance.
Qualified applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or a related field, and some experience working actively in a research laboratory. Experience as a student may be considered. Experience in standard molecular biology procedures preferred.
In addition, candidates must be able to perform routine laboratory data analysis and procedures; independently prepare solutions and reagents; perform or learn to work with animal models; resolve problems and work accurately and with attention to detail. Must have ability to analyze and organize work procedures; plan and execute tasks or experiments; and interpret and report findings. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel is required. Additional expertise in statistical and data analysis software, database software, modeling software, and imaging and/or image analysis software is a plus.
Required Minimum Level of Education: *Degree Required
Required Specific Degree/Training: Bachelor's degree or higher in Biology, Biochemistry or other related sciences.
Required Minimum Level of Experience: Some - up to 4 years
Required Specific Experience: Experience working actively in a research laboratory. Experience as a student may be considered.
Preferred Minimum Level of Experience: Some - up to 4 years
Preferred Specific Experience: Experience in standard molecular biology procedures preferred.
