The Network Technician IV is responsible for providing advanced level support requiring minimal to occasional supervision, guidance, and training for skilled technicians with strong background and job related experience in network/telecommunication installation. Routinely leads and mentors team members in the installation, construction and maintenance of large complex installations for the University s networks.
Required Education and Experience:
Associate's degree or equivalent technical school certification in electronics or telecommunications.
One year of job-related experience may substitute for one year of education. Three years experience in computer networking.
Required Knowledge and Skills:
Must be able to work in a collaborative team environment.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Must have strong interpersonal skills.
PreferredEducation and Experience:
Corporate or military training programs in data networks/telecommunications.
Experience with data network physical installation, especially copper and fiber cable.
Exposure to various operating systems (Unix, Windows), network architecture, network protocols, office productivity software, basic network diagnostic tools (ping, traceroute, etc.) , an understanding of building and construction codes, electrical construction experience, and telecommunication experience.
Additional technical certification in networking design and support preferred.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
Exposure to various operating systems (Unix, Windows), network architecture, network protocols, office productivity software, basic network diagnostic tools (ping, traceroute, etc.) and an understanding of building and construction codes preferred.
Preferred Licenses, Certifications and Registrations
BICSI Installer 2.
Routinely performs the following duties: Install unshielded twisted pair cable and fiber optic cables to required standards. Plan large complex on-site network construction and cabling installation project.
Test and certify network to required installation standards using various low voltage and light-source cabling test equipment. Configure and diagnose installed LAN equipment in house and on-site. Complete carpentry and mechanical duties.
Maintain and replace the legacy LAN infrastructure. Perform routine field troubleshooting tests for data communication networks using various low voltage and light-source cabling test equipment. Interact directly with University customers for routine problem resolution.
Check for billing accuracy in charges and codes related to large complex assignments. Utilization of circuit records, network commands, and diagnostic facilities to complete large complex assignments. Planning and designing the University cabling infrastructure. Utilize various operating systems and office productivity software. On-site coordination/scheduling of large complex installation jobs. Conduct pre and post project quality control job inspections of large complex University installation projects. Create and update network maps. Maintain documentation of installation activities and network connections for large complex assignments. Track and maintain inventoried parts/equipment.
Occasionally leads an installation for large-scale projects and delegates required tasks to team members/co-workers.
Participate in training and professional development sessions. Maintain communications utilizing radios. Maintain an understanding of current building and construction codes as well as current copper and fiber cabling standards. Perform other duties as assigned.
