The shift will be a combination of two 12 hour shifts and two 8 hours shifts, and weekends may be required. JOB SUMMARYThe 4NE nursing staff provides excellent nursing care to those medical/surgical patients who are acutely ill and in varying stages of recuperation from diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical intervention. The nursing staff delivers specialized care for patients requiring the skill and knowledge for the general surgery, thoracic surgery, neuroscience (medical and surgical) and otolaryngology patient populations. The Patient Care Technician (PCT) provides direct and indirect care to patients and their families under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. Typical duties include: assisting patients with activities of daily living, maintaining a safe environment of care, preparing patients for surgery, close observation of confused patients, transportation, maintenance of equipment and supplies and clerical tasks. JOB DUTIES and PERFORMANCE STANDARDSAccurately performs all duties that support patient and family care as assigned. Sets up equipment, prepares patients for procedures, and assists physician or RN with procedures.Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to observe, document, and report data related to changes in patient status and/or symptoms. Observes and reports the results of interventions to the RN. Makes observations of patients' safety and comfort needs and responds appropriately. Collects specific data as directed. Demonstrates a patient and family centered approach to patient care at all times by introducing themselves, stating their role, and maintaining patient's privacy. Responds to patient requests for assistance in a timely and appropriate manner. Answers patient call lights; determines nature of problem; responds within scope and/or obtains appropriate resources.Performs tests and procedures such as EKG, bladder scans, removal of catheters, blood draws, and blood glucose checks. Documentation is complete and accurate. Demonstrates the ability to document in the medical record in an efficient and timely manner. Demonstrates the ability to be self-directed and make efficient use of time to meet the needs of patient and families as well as unit functions. Works with the RN to set priorities for care. Maintains equipment and stocks supplies. Demonstrates knowledge using patient care equipment safely. Performs safety checks as assigned. May provide focused equipment support for specialty services, including: overseeing inventory of designated equipment, assuring that the unit is consistently in order and equipment/supplies safely stored. Orients new PCTs, staff, students and volunteers as needed. Assists in the teaching of safety for patients. Reports learning needs and patient requests for information to the RN. Reinforces teaching as directed by RN. Demonstrates accountability and responsibility for own actions and decisions in the performance of job duties. Demonstrates flexibility and stress tolerance. Demonstrates excellent communication skills verbally, in writing, and in entering data into the electronic medical record. Resolves conflict in a professional manner. Performs other related duties as assigned. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTSAbility to effectively and clearly communicate in English, both verbally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal skills. Basic Computer Knowledge.
