Florida Hospital Orlando seeks to hire a Histology Intern who will embrace our mission to extend the healing ministry of Christ.
Located on a lush tropical campus, our flagship hospital, 1,107-bed Florida Hospital Orlando, serves as the major tertiary facility for much of the Southeast, the Caribbean and South America. Florida Hospital Orlando houses one of the largest Emergency Departments and largest cardiac catheterization labs in the country. We are already one of the busiest hospitals in the nation, providing service excellence to more than 32,000 inpatients and 125,000 outpatients each year.
The laboratory at the Orlando campus is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and serves the patients at the Orlando campus, esoteric testing from other Florida Hospital campuses and the broader community through the outreach services of the Florida Hospital Laboratories. This team provides services including chemistry, hematology, transfusions, microbiology, immunology, special chemistry, molecular diagnostics, tissue typing, diagnostic hematology, cytology and pathology. The laboratory goal is to produce safe, accurate and timely test results through the use of innovative instrumentation and efficient work processes, all performed in a cost efficient manner. Over 36 million results are reported on an annual basis. These efforts are supported by over 395 staff members including pathologists, technologists, lab assistants and support staff.
On Call: Scheduled days will vary; 6:00a – 10:00a
The Histology Intern receives training and performs anatomical pathology procedures in assigned areas as licensed under the guidance of the Histology Management Team to gain expertise with a certificate of experience. The internship timeframe is for 6 months. Completion of the 6-month internship does not guarantee future employment. Will be trained on department activities, assessed for competency, and evaluated on performance expectations based on the department goals, utilizing sample tissue designated for learning purposes only. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
Technical skills related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, routine and special histologic staining, cover slipping and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical and body fluid specimens
Ability to work closely with Pathologists and Surgeons
Ability to utilize automated Histology equipment properly according to lab procedures and manufacturers' instructions
Ability to learn and apply accurately computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices
Mature judgment and the ability to handle confidential information within Florida Hospital guidelines and applicable regulations.
Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written English with patients, staff, partners and customers of varied backgrounds in a respectful, effective, and professional manner
Ability to read text and numbers in English, and to comprehend, measure, reason, match, problem solve, under supervision
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Required:
Licensed by the State of Florida as a Histology Technician or Histology Technologist
Nationally certified as a HT (ASCP) or equivalent (Preferred)

Will learn how to perform the pre- and post-analytical activities related to anatomic pathology tests including specimen collection and processing, Quality Control, equipment maintenance, inventory control, Quality Assurance and proficiency testing procedures through hands on processing under the direction of the instructor.
Will learn how to perform the analytical activities related to specimen processing, embedding, microtomy, cryotomy, routine and special histologic staining, frozen sectioning, cover slipping and handling of irreplaceable tissue, surgical and body fluid specimens through hands on processing under the direction of the instructor.
Will learn quality assurance in support of cross departmental partnerships and communication amongst Pathologists, Pathologists' Assistants, hospital staff and clients by following the direction of the instructor and doing the immediate steps to correct, follow through and report any mistakes or errors to department manager, assistant manager or lead tech including resolution of customer service issues within guidelines.
Will learn hospital/laboratory structure and culture by attending and participating in scheduled department and committee meetings/activities as assigned. Will learn and have knowledge of Performance Improvement by participating in Performance Improvement activities including evaluation of any new procedures and equipment through hands on processing and documentation under the direction of the instructor.
Will learn to adhere to the Florida Hospital Corporate Compliance Plan and to all rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies and accrediting bodies; and protect confidentiality of patient information and results at all times by attending hospital and laboratory orientation and following the direction of the instructor.
Will learn to follow appropriate safety policies by attending hospital and laboratory orientation and by demonstrating the appropriate use of PPE, handwashing, and hazardous chemical handling under the direction of the instructor. Will learn to adhere to the Chemical Hygiene plan and Infection Control policies by demonstrating understanding through observations, hands on processing and/or written tests. Employee/intern job duties may include transport of hazardous waste from the point of generation to a designated secure storage area; employee/intern will be required to complete initial training (prior to handling hazardous waste) and refresher training to include proper handling and transport of hazardous waste, and proper selection, use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
Will learn to perform other duties to ensure the smooth operation of the department by hands on processing, observation, discussions, participation and/or written tests under the direction of the instructor.
