Laboratory Operations and Research Compliance Application Systems Analyst
This position oversees, configures, and deploys changes to the suite of software applications under the electronic umbrella of systems overseen by Research Integrity and Assurance (RIA) including Human Subjects Development and Management modules (by InfoEd Global); and also overseen by Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) including Elements (by TOPAZ Technologies), and other related systems. This position is responsible for software configuration, upkeep, testing, support, and for creating reports. This position oversees vendor partners and provides technical direction to end users. The Application Systems Analyst elicits requirements, develops operating procedures, and provides user training and support. This position may assist with managing projects relating to new installations, new system acceptance, and system modifications/upgrades.
Application Software Administration, Operations and Support
Performs software configurations necessary to ensure reliable operation of the systems. Coordinates the installation of new software; adds/removes user accounts; assists with data conversions; resets passwords; documents all system configurations. Monitors software systems for abnormalities; reviews application logs and data feeds looking for potential problems; troubleshoots and resolves software configuration problems, partnering with the vendor and central Information Technology support as appropriate. Coordinates application patches/upgrades and performs the associated regression testing. Coordinates system maintenance/support activities with other departments on campus. Creates/prepares reports by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information using various reporting tools as needed; oversees the services of third-party systems integrator vendors. Maintains specialized hardware peripherals (barcode readers and printers). Utilizes the University Service Management system to track, classify and triage all software incidents. Manages updates to the eRIA and LAR websites. Provides technical direction and hands-on assistance to technicians in diagnostic procedures, troubleshooting, servicing, installing and acceptance testing of related systems. Attends software conferences and builds relationships with peer institutions as appropriate.
Procedure Development & User Training
Develops and maintains systems technical information and user operating instructions. Provides training and oversight to system users on the proper operation of the various systems. Interfaces with the University's Research Resources department; collaborates with the Office of Information Technology and other essential users. Assists in the development of system specifications, and requests for proposals. Assists in selecting vendors, and writes administrative procedures required to support operations.
Responsible for researching, suggesting, and managing new projects to replace, upgrade, or install research compliance and laboratory operations software. Utilizes project management best practices to identify, review, track, and control project milestones, deliverables, and to communicate with stakeholders. Monitors vendors release notes and communicates with the department to determine when an upgrade is necessary.
Acceptance Testing and Commissioning
Tests newly installed programs and databases, tracks and corrects errors, and makes necessary modifications to the configuration. Coordinates and oversees the User Acceptance Testing for all applications in the eRIA and LAR suite. Oversees new system installations.
Education/Experience - Bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, electronics engineering, information systems, computer systems administration, or closely related degree, and at least five (5) years' verifiable software development, report development, or packaged application configuration experience with web-based systems and databases such as Oracle and Microsoft Access. Prior experience using a Service Management ticketing system for tier 1 help desk support including incident tracking and triage. Prior experience supporting InfoEd Global products is preferred. Prior experience with TOPAZ Elements is preferred.
Technical Understanding - ability to read, create, interpret, and understand Microsoft Access Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), Standard Query Language (SQL), database schemas, flowcharts, requirements, specifications, user guides, sequences of operation, and other technical data; ability to understand and analyze the complexities of software applications.
Knowledge of Information Technology Systems - Must have a good working knowledge of software and the related infrastructure in a production environment including computer operating systems, databases, networks, security, and troubleshooting techniques. Must have good working knowledge of one or more computer programming languages used to manipulate data.
Communication Skills - ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to a diverse audience, and possess a knowledge of appropriate escalation protocols
Project Coordination Skills - proven track record of coordinating technology projects; understanding of project management concepts
Multi-tasking and Complexity - ability to successfully handle multiple tasks and deadlines at once, and be able to determine appropriate priorities; must be able to make independent interpretations and make appropriate decisions that are in the best interest of the organization and that are consistent with the objectives of senior-management
After-Hour Emergency Response - must be able to respond to after normal business hour emergencies and incidents as needed, and on short notice
Essential Personnel - must be able to function in an essential personnel role, which may include an extended on-campus presence during local, regional, national emergencies
