The Band Instrument Repair program at Minnesota State College Southeast (Red Wing campus) is seeking a full-time instructor to teach, primarily woodwind instrument repair beginning August 2018. Teaching in this program is tremendously rewarding, as this instructor joins a thriving, successful Program with students eager to learn, resulting in successful graduates around the globe. The instructor also joins experienced, supportive administrative and student services teams ready and willing to help the new faculty learn the ropes at our College, where students come first. The instructor may earn unlimited status upon completion of six successful probationary semesters.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
Primary teaching responsibilities will be to teach fundamental repair skills on clarinet, flute, saxophone, and double reeds and assist with brass instrument repair instruction when necessary. Other duties are described as follows:
Design instruction to meet student, college and industry needs
Create and deliver instructional materials, and course and program assessments such as presentations, handouts, quizzes and exams.
Instruct students on machine tool operation including bench motors, sanders, grinders, and metal lathes to ensure a safe, learning-focused environment adaptive to multiple learning styles
Advise prospective and current students on courses related to their area of study.
Maintain and advance your technical and instructional skills through professional development.
Facilitate annual advisory committee meetings and in addition provide quarterly (at minimum) communication with the committee
Create public relation pieces focused on student recruitment including print, social media, program promotion materials, trade-related articles, videos highlighting techniques, and tools originating at the Red Wing Campus.
Coordinate NAPBIRT-related regional clinics held at the college
Participate in trade-related events (e.g. presenting clinics or displaying at events)
Participate on College committees, internal advisory teams, and other events that will highlight and promote the college and the program.
Graduate of a band instrument repair program.
Occupational Experience Requirement
Four full-time years (or equivalent) of verified related paid work experience in repair of brass, woodwind, and percussion band instruments and organs (non-electronic), including set-up and basic minor repairs of violin family instruments and guitar family instruments.
One year of this work experience shall be within the five years immediately preceding the date of application for the credential field. The recency requirement shall be waived if the individual has two years of successful full-time (or equivalent) postsecondary teaching experience in the credential field within the last five years.
Teaching and Learning Competency Requirement
Completion required prior to the end of the probationary period.
Graduate of a band instrument repair program and/or equivalent work experience in a shop respected by peers in the trade
Demonstrated skills in the areas of communication, organization and presentations
Experience in teaching
Experience as a mentor for band instrument repair apprentices and/or as a supervisor of band instrument repair technicians
Experience with machine tool operation such as metal lathes
Demonstrated and/or presented band instrument repair at professional conferences
Ability to work with a diverse student population
