Lab Technician, Electrical and Computer Engineering-2008322
The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) has an immediate opening for a Lab Technician. ECE is a diverse academic community of 1,400+ individuals (faculty, staff and students) and includes global research and teaching efforts through extensions of our Pittsburgh academic programs and research in Silicon Valley, Portugal, Rwanda, Singapore and Thailand. You will be part of the Student and Academic Affairs group and will report to the Director.
In this role you are responsible for supporting all aspects of the department's educational labs which include seven labs totaling 5,500+ square feet, 500+ student users, and 12+ courses with lab components. Your main responsibilities will include providing technical support and maintenance of lab equipment, ordering and tracking of project supplies, and serving as the primary point of contact for faculty and students for training and other lab related activity.
Lead day-to-day lab operations; conduct weekly maintenance and calibration of instruments and equipment; inspect, assemble and test equipment as needed.
Work with internal and external partners to facilitate repairs; equipment includes but is not limited to: oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, FPGA boards, power supplies, function generators and soldering irons.
Instruct students in the handling and operation of equipment and maintaining a safe lab environment; build and maintain training materials and standard methodologies.
In consultation with faculty, oversee the ordering and replacement of outdated lab equipment; track service agreements and ensure lab space is properly stocked and prepared for spring, summer and fall semesters.
Order parts and supplies for student projects and groups and maintain a system for distribution; reconcile all purchases made with department issued credit card using Oracle.
Maintain an inventory and expenditure list of all lab equipment and part orders.
Stay current on state of the art technologies and techniques that will improve the overall educational lab experience.
Supervise and train Teaching Assistants and student employees in support of maintaining safe, clean and organized labs.
Using the University software system coordinate keycard access to the labs.
Collaborate with the Academic Services Center on scheduling lab specific courses.
Work in partnership with the Facilities Manager to maintain a safe and functional lab infrastructure.
Coordinate and participate in lab safety inspections; attend lab safety trainings as needed.
Other related duties as assigned.
Ability to follow instructions, multitask, plan ahead and work in a rapidly changing environment.
Associate's degree supplemented by a certificate from a minimum two year technical program and/or relevant experience.
Minimum of three years' experience repairing or maintaining laboratory instruments.
Demonstrated knowledge of specified lab equipment, related software and commonly used project parts.
Work well under pressure, maintain positive relationships, providing extraordinary customer service.
Possess strong verbal and written communications skills.
Demonstrated experience working independently, organizing own work and coordinating work activities of others.
This position requires periods of high mobility and heavy lifting.
Lab experience in higher education or other educational settings.
Bachelor's degree in engineering, electronics or a related field.
