Facilitates the composite manufacturing operations of the Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation (IACMI) Scale-Up Research Facility (SURF) through set-up and operation of processing equipment to fabricate prototype components. Includes pre-processing, auxiliary/secondary equipment, injection and compression molding, and any post processing required. Additional duties associated with general day to day operation and maintenance of the facilities, as required. This is an end dated position with employment dates of 4/01/2018 through 3/31/2019 with annual extensions, as funding is available.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Associates degree in Electronics or Mechanics or equivalent combination of related technical training and experience. Three years experience as an Instrument Maker I or equivalent experience in one or more skilled trades areas specific to the job duties to be performed. Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials tools, equipment, occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade areas specific to the job duties to be performed. Ability to design complex parts and assist in the design of precise and complicated instruments and systems. Skill in the use of appropriate tools and equipment. May be required to furnish own tools. May require working in and around X-ray producing apparatus, radioactive materials cryogenic liquids and/or other potentially hazardous materials. Frequent lifting of 26 pounds and over isrequired.
Minimum 3 years demonstrated broad and diverse experience in the operation, adjustment and maintenance of large-scale hydraulic presses used for forming and/or molding.
Experience with plastic and polymer composite materials, plastic injection molds operation, maintenance, and construction including hot manifolds and valve gating.
Experience in injection molding and compression molding of composites highly preferred.
Expert knowledge of computer controlled, programmable or conventional machine tools, machining and related operations desirable, but not required.
Molding certification and minimum of 5 years experience demonstrated broad and diverse experience in the operation, adjustment and maintenance of large scale hydraulic presses used for forming and/or molding.
Thorough knowledge and demonstrated skills with associated tools for hydraulics, electronics, pneumatics, mold plumbing and other technical areas associated with large manufacturing equipment.
Computer skills; proficient with computers.
Good collaborative, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
