EECS is one of the largest departments at Cal campus, consisting of over 130 faculty, adjunct, active emeriti and PIR appointments, over 2,000 undergraduates both in the College of Engineering and Letters and Science, with 560 graduate students and 65 staff members. The Electronic Support Group (ESG) within the department of EECS, has been providing expert support, problem solving and for pioneering development of everything from laboratory instructional materials to building’s security electronics. Besides electronics, the group provides expert creative development pertaining to optics, testing of semiconductor chip making and other hard science and technical areas as needed. The group is one of only three or four electronics shops on campus and unique in providing dedicated continuity at such a high level of technical and scientific expertise. Specifically, ESG is responsible for the creation, planning, development, set up, maintenance and operation of all EECS instructional engineering and electronics instructional laboratories. ESG is also responsible for audio-visual (AV) support in EECS conference rooms and classrooms, both for the instructional and departmental activities as well as the support of capturing of on-line course. The Assistant Development Engineer reports directly to the Senior Development Engineer. The position exists to support and maintain laboratory curricula in robotics, embedded systems and other areas as needed in coordination with other staff and faculty, who will be overseeing the course development and focusing on lecture content while this position focuses on laboratory content. This position provides for creative talent and support function with continuity complementary to the creative initiative provided by faculty, and provides an institutional memory to maintain and bridge instructional laboratory development and support the practice and understanding to meet faculty needs for cutting edge laboratory experiences for their students, while providing a dedicated continuity surpassing what faculty can provide given the other demands on their time. Provides primary professional engineering and engineering technician support as part of academic instructional lab and/or research projects and programs. Engineering activities include the design, construction, testing of experimental systems, and operation of analytical systems, establishment of performance specifications, user training and documentation. Engineering technician tasks include confirming performance and high level troubleshooting, as needed.
40% Under direct supervision, setup equipment prior to lab in session, ensure that each station is in working order and would be presentable to students anew each time. Also to check AV equipment in the classrooms and conference rooms that the group is supporting. Participates in the construction, assembly, and laboratory and field testing of equipment and instruments, includes parts kits assembly and distributions with GSI and students.
20% Under direct supervision, participates in engineering and mathematical analysis of experimental data or in the mathematical solution of physical and engineering problems. Help identify recurring issues if any, so preventive measures can be taken.
20% Acquires skills to independently perform more complex analyses, assembly, laboratory, field testing of equipment and instruments. Understands the operation of each instrument and how it works with each of the experiment for the labs the incumbent will be supporting. Help with the maintenance or design of upgrades as needed.
10% Develops engineering reports, drawings and status reports. Keep track of parts and inventory, keep log of repairs and fixes as part of the report. Update drawings of CAD works that would be useful to the instructional lab and AV needs.
10% Subjecting to review by a more senior level engineer, assists with the implementation of business processes such as with audio-visual recordings requests, 3D printing, assemble electronics components.
