Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Laboratory Technician for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The primary purpose of the Laboratory Technician under the direction of the Microbiologist, as a supervisory official in a state department, institution or agency, performs tasks involved in operating, maintaining and cleaning various types of laboratory equipment, including but not limited to preparing media, handling specimens, supplies and equipment. Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Takes a leading part in operating complex laboratory equipment by following directions and instructions; sterilizes laboratory equipment and supplies.
Cleans and maintains laboratory machines and equipment including; automatic autoclaves, turbomatic washing machines, electronic dryers, large ovens, automatic pipette plugging machines, automatic liquid filling machines, automatic bottle capping machines, industrial labeling machines, high vacuum autoclaves, and cage washers.
Carries various sized packages of supplies and equipment throughout the laboratory areas.
Unpacks laboratory specimens and containers and delivers these to the proper laboratory area for analysis.
Assists in decontaminating, washing, and sterilizing laboratory glassware.
Inspects glassware and other materials and equipment for breakage, cleanliness and fitness for use.
Prepares and dispenses sterilized media for laboratory use.
Assists in instructing Laboratory Service Workers in the proper use, handling, cleaning, adjustment and minor repair of laboratory equipment when cross-training peers.
Disposes of laboratory waste in accordance with established sanitary procedures.
Adheres to all safety guidelines.
Observes sanitary procedures.
Maintains the essential records and files.
Understands and adheres to Rutgers' compliance standards as they appear in RBHS's Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.
Minimum Education and Experience:
One (1) year of experience in a modern laboratory which shall have included the operation of sterilization and other laboratory equipment, including but not limited to the care of laboratory samples and/or laboratory animals and the maintenance of related cleaning services.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be comfortable working with bio-hazardous materials and chemical waste. (Safety training and education and Personal Protective Equipment (when necessary) are provided.)
Basic computer skills are required: ability to retrieve and send emails, update documents, basic spreadsheets and use web-based applications.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
PHYSICALDEMANDS: Position requires standing for a long duration of time, and walking the facility, sitting, use of the hands to finger, handle or feel, talk and hear 2/3 of the time, reach with hands and arms over 1/3 of the time, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl under 1/3 of the time. Position requires lifting 1/3 of the time up to 35 pounds in order to dispose of Laboratory sanitary waste and lift laboratory equipment.
WORKENVIRONMENT: Moderate noise environment with some exposure to blood borne pathogens requiring the use of personal protective equipment; some potential exposure to bio-hazardous materials and chemical waste.
