The UC San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Marine Physical Laboratory Division (MPL) is seeking a new Electronic Technician Trainee for the Multi-scale Ocean Dynamics (MOD) group. The MOD group is a lively, diverse and dynamic collection of scientists (Matthew Alford, Drew Lucas, Jen MacKinnon, Rob Pinkel, Jerry Smith, Gunnar Voet, and Amy Waterhouse), engineers, postdocs and students that seeks to better understand small-scale processes in the ocean, and their impact on everything from coastal circulation to global climate change. We have multiple overlapping sea-going projects in various far-flung parts of the world, using innovative instruments that have largely been developed in-house. We are seeking a new team member to help us strengthen and expand these capabilities.
Under close supervision, the incumbent shall perform increasingly more difficulty leading to the development of skills related to testing, fabrication, and assembly work in the development of electronic equipment. The incumbent will operate machine shop tools, assist with materials related to current projects, and assist in the development and operation of equipment at sea and during Arctic field experiments.
Willingness to work overtime and weekends as required by workload and operational tasks.
Willingness to participate in shipboard and Arctic field experiments a minimum of 40 days per year.
Digital and analog electronics experience and training.
Two years post-secondary formal technical training and/or demonstrable equivalent experience in digital and analog electronics, and electro-mechanical skills.
