Under general supervision, independently perform skilled work consistent with the automotive industry such as inspect, adjust, service/maintain, diagnose and repair a variety of UCSD Fleet heavy duty vehicles to include full size transit buses, shuttle buses, cutaway buses, and trucks with a gross vehicle weight over 10,000 pounds.
Install and repair special equipment; operate and maintain tools, machinery and computerized systems used in the maintenance and repair of equipment. Troubleshoot and repair systems and components; perform minor welding work; estimate the cost of materials and labor for work orders; and keep simple records and prepare reports as necessary.
May train or provide work instruction to Assistant Heavy Duty Vehicle Technicians. Respond to emergency vehicle breakdowns and road assistance service calls for UCSD vehicles.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 4:30PM to 1:00AM. Occasional overtime may be required.
Progressive experience with Heavy Duty vehicle repair; including but not limited to air and hydraulic brake systems / anti-lock brake systems, heavy duty spring and air suspensions, wheel/tire servicing, engine cooling systems, 12 & 24 volt battery & charging systems. Steering & suspension. Drive trains on vehicles such as transit buses, shuttle buses, cutaway buses, and trucks.
Experience inspecting and diagnosing mechanical and electrical malfunctions and perform a variety of skilled repairs on Heavy Duty vehicle equipment, components and systems including wheel chair lifts, Diesel exhaust filtering systems, air conditioning systems, fire suppression & methane detection and CNG tank inspections.
Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools & shop equipment typically used in the trade.
Ability to operate and maintain hand and power tools typically used in the trade; experience with heavy duty vehicle diagnostic equipment.
Demonstrates experience in trouble shooting using sophisticated onboard diagnostic platforms, including scanners, Multi meters, scopes, and laptops.
Basic computer skills, ability to navigate a data base and vehicle maintenance programs, check email, electronic timekeeping, and other relative information available through the Internet.
Proven ability to work in a team environment, communicate well with others, maintain positive relations with co-workers.
Demonstrates the ability to read & understand, A/C & D/C Voltage, ohms, amps, watts.
Experience in preventive maintenance, breakdown, repair and trouble shooting of Heavy Duty vehicles.
Ability to effectively identify required parts for heavy duty vehicle repair, prepare estimates of costs, time and materials.
Ability to effectively reference, interpet and apply information disseminated from mechanical, electrical and other relevant heavy duty vehicle schematics. Both hard bound and electronic formats.
Knowledge of safety practices related to a heavy duty vehicle repair operation.
Ability to promote positive public relations in a customer and safety-driven environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to read, write and follow oral instruction in English.
Excellent organizational skills necessary to independently prioritize workload and meet established deadlines

CA Commercial (Class B license with passenger and air brake endorsements)
Electrical diagnostics/repair and servicing air conditioning units.
Demonstrated knowledge and experience using onboard diagnostic equipment systems.
Ability to operate/drive university trucks and trailer to retrieve vehicles from both on and off campus.
Must possess and maintain Class B Driver License with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements.
FBI/DOJ Background check and clearances required prior to hire.
DMV Driving Record clearances required prior to hire.
Must be able to work nights and occasional overtime.(M-F, 4:30 PM to 1:00 AM)
