The Center for Transportation Research is seeking a Research Technician to collect traffic data under a contract with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). This position will work out of the TDOT regional headquarters in Nashville with responsibility for traffic data collection activities across the 26 counties in TDOT's Region 3 (visit https://www.tn.gov/tdot/topic/county-outline-map to see a map of the TDOT regions). Primary job duties include field collection of traffic data, data entry and reporting, and support for other sponsor or university activities. Typical traffic data collection activities include:
ensure data collection vehicle is supplied properly with equipment and supplies (traffic counters, road tubes, chains, locks, clamps, nails, etc.)
travel to designated locations where traffic counters are to be placed
proper placement and setup of pneumatic count tubes and electronic traffic counter
return to previous sites in a timely manner to collect count equipment and retrieve data
forward traffic count data to TDOT staff on a weekly basis
conduct other traffic data collection activities, including manual intersection turning movement counts, on an as-needed basis This position will require daily travel with frequent overnight and statewide travel. The position holder will report to a supervisor within the Center for Transportation Research but must also communicate and coordinate activities with multiple TDOT staff members. The target starting date for this position is October 2, 2017.
