The Applied Physics Laboratory at the University of Washington (APL-UW) is a national center for advanced science and engineering research and development and education. APL has an outstanding opportunity for a full time Mechanical Engineer.
The Mechanical Engineer in the Applied Physics Laboratory's Ocean Engineering Department will be responsible for the design, construction and field deployment of specialized mechanical systems for oceanographic and acoustic instrumentation. Design tasks will be varied and may range from structural frames and pressure vessels to electronics chassis and hydraulic systems. Special emphasis will be placed on the design of mechanical and electromechanical systems for long term operation in the ocean. Duties will contribute to a strategically important, highly visible, and multi-million dollar projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Department of Defense (DoD), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as well as opportunities for collaboration with other internal UW departments and other applied research centers at other universities.
Specific work will be completed in the following areas:
The incumbent will use SolidWorks CAD software to design oceanographic hardware, including but not limited to deep ocean mooring design, that meets defined scientific requirements.
The incumbent will perform stress analysis of oceanographic hardware using both structural analysis software (ANSYS FEA) and empirical equations.
The incumbent will coordinate with Applied Physics Laboratory Ocean Engineering machine shop and Field Engineers during the fabrication process to ensure the finished product meets design specifications.
The incumbent will coordinate the assembly and testing of mechanical hardware with other engineers and technicians.
The incumbent will serve as the design and engineering expert for at-sea installation/deployment and recovery of the oceanographic equipment.
Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering and at least eight years of experience; equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as license/certification/registration
Experience with mechanical and ocean engineering design
Experience using mechanical computer-aided design tools
Able to meet the requirements necessary to work at sea in small to large vessels for extended periods and willing to perform the required duties aboard ships.
Able to work independently, and as part of a research team, interacting cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds, academic levels, and nationalities
Able to acquire and maintain a Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance
